Quick grip question

This is advertised as a 1957 K38 Masterpiece, so I’m putting it in this section. Are these grips cokes? They look like they have the larger checkered pattern, but no medallions. Did S&W make cokes without medallions? No view from the rear or bottom, just side pictures, sorry.

The experts will be by, but at a first glance , no they're not. The checkering area is too small and IIRC all genuine cokes have medallions.

I don't think S&W made stocks like that without medallions (except service stocks made before WWII) and no they're not "cokes." Look like nice non-relieved target stocks but doubt that they ever saw the S&W factory. It also is probably not a 1957 gun, if it were it would have five screws and the upper sideplate screw is missing. Became the model 15 in 1957 but I don't think any from 1957 or earlier had less than five screws. Someone more knowledgeable will be along soon I'm sure.

Non-factory grips. If you can provide the SN, it can be approximately dated.

The top sideplate screw was eliminated in 1956. The first model-numbered K frames had four screws, not five. The trigger guard screw was eliminated in 1961 on the K frames, resulting in three screw guns. In the case of the Model 15, the 15 and 15-1 had four screws and the first three screw variant was the 15-2. From sometime in 1956, until model marked guns appeared in 1958, the Combat Masterpiece had four screws.

Thanks, I hoped you'd be along to get it right; now if I can just remember it for next time. Guess we still don't know what year the gun is although I don't suppose that really matters to the "cokes" question.
