Quick thinking cop saves his own life

Good for the officer, this Perp needs and deserves long term confinement from the looks of his rap sheet.

Your post made me remember another similar incident.

As I recall, when Lee Oswald was captured at the Texas theater in Dallas after the assassination of JFK, one of the officers (Officer McDonald I believe) grabbed Oswalds' gun in a similar move; preventing the hammer from falling.

I was about 12 years old at the time but that story has stuck with me all those years.

I'd be willing to say that the officer may have put his finger behind the trigger, instead of under the hammer. That's the only way I could figure he got his finger broken- either that or just in the torque of the perp trying to wrestle the gun away.

At least he didn't stick his finger in the end of the barrel.

With this perp's history, why was he out on the street? By my estimates his elevation is about 6' higher than it should be.

Have you ever seen how fast the hammer falls? I wouldn't think you could get your finger in there that fast, unless it was on top of the hammer as the trigger was pulled. I'm not sure how he did it, but I'm glad he wasn't hurt any more than he was.

Us old timers and the Secret Service know this trick. It's harder to do with a semi auto, but you can do it. With a striker fired weapon, point the gun away from yourself and try to bind the slide during firing. With luck, it will jam after the first shot. That's when you pull out all the stops. Gouge his eyes, punch his throat, etc., until you get that gun away from him. Remember, he is trying to kill you. You are fighting for your life! Never give up!!

He lucked out. At the NYPD academy when I came on they taught us that you could also palm the frame and cylinder of a revolver to prevent someone from firing the gun. On semi auto's we were taught to push the slide and hold it out of battery to prevent a shot from being fired.

Here is a bore story. In the late 80's I was in a Hospital (full uniform) giving my info at intake, over looking the ER waiting room. I was being checked out for minor injuries inflicted while assisting another officer make an arrest.

A scuffle broke out in the waiting room, right outside the intake window. As I was opening the door to enter the waiting room and break the fight up a shot rang out. One guy was shot in the chest and some how I was able to get the guy with the gun down on the floor. I was able to hold onto his gun, but wasn't able to wrest it away. Luckily at the time I still had my Ruger PSS in .38 and was able to club him with it and take his gun. I was holding onto his frame and cylinder the whole time, while I was on top of him and on the floor.

Needless to say, when we transitioned to 9mm, I went with a 5946 instead of a Glock.

I hope for people sake it doesn't go back to the way it was in the 70's, 80's and early 90's.

I've got a scar on my little finger I got while demonstrating that move to a class of HP recruits.

That's the problem now a days. The perp already did time for MURDER, along with various other crimes, and yet still walks the streets.
Too many hardcore criminals are let out all the time, and they are trying to take away OUR guns ????

Why hasn't the corpse of a dangerous repeat offender scumbag like this already been pushed into a shallow trench, along with his criminal compatriots?

There you go again...picking on a poor, under class boy who had a bad childhood and just one parent. If he only had love and kindness in his youth! He no doubt deserves yet another chance and not be hassled by big, mean police officers.
