Just looked out the window at my wife's bird feeder which is quite popular with the many squirrels in our neighborhood. This time it appeared that the squirrel had dumped a pile of bird seed on the ground under the feeder and a rabbit and a squirrel were fighting over it. At first it looked like the rabbit was intimidating the squirrel. When the squirrel would charge the rabbit it would wait till the last moment and then leap over the squirrel. The squirrel eventually started laying its tail over its back which made it appear much larger. Now it looks like the rabbit has given up and the squirrel is the winner.

Its too hot to be outside . Beats watching tv .

Bugs wouldn't have backed down..ya maroon....guess that was a wimpy rabbit...we had one that got "amorous" with some bunny slippers we had in the garage once. This one just didn't have the proper motivations.

Squirrels can be fierce, especially relative to their size. I had a big cat once that used to chase dogs out of the yard. He tried to tree a big gray squirrel and the squirrel bit him a couple of times and chased him around the yard. I saw the same or another squirrel chase the cat a few times after that. Cat outweighed the squirrel by a factor of 5:1 or better.

Cool story OP. Interesting how the squirrel uses his tail to intimidate. Had to have been fascinating to watch!

I used to have a few bird dogs and I had a quail pen that had a recall funnel for the quail to return to after a training session. The funnel was small so as to keep raccoons and opossums out. I went to feed and water the quail one day and there were a bunch of dead quail in the front/visible section. i grabbed my shotgun and opened up the back covered section and a squirrel ran out. I did manage to knock the carnivorous squirrel out of the tree tops as he made his getaway. I thought squirrels were just herbivores and maybe for the most part, but I sure saw one that liked the taste of blood.

I've got probably 10 to 12 squirrels that I hand feed peanuts. They are absolutely hilarious to watch and they each have different personalities. Not sure what it is about the tail thing but the new ones that come up and are very unsure about me hold their tail that way. Some only get close enough to take the peanut and others will come sit on my lap and eat them. One has become really friendly. She usually meets me at the truck when I get home from work and has tried several times to follow me in the house. A lot of times when I'm out working in the shop with the big door up she will come in and harass the **** out of me wanting peanuts. Sometimes it's annoying when I really need to get something done but most of the time I enjoy taking a little time out to sit and feed them.

I've seen dogs going into a fight with their tail between their legs. Other dog tries to bite them in the belly and he gets a mouthful of tail.

Maybe squirrels is similar.

With his tail up over his back, if something tried to bite him in the spine, he gets a mouthful of tail, and Rocky can escape to fly again.

You could be on to something. I've seen quite a few of the squirrels I feed missing chunks of or nearly all of the hair on their tails.

They pull the hair out of their tail to line their nest I believe. Gotta herd of them stealing my pecans!

Aw! Cute squirrel!

Back in the spring I saw a large hawk land in a tree top and a grey squirrel attacked and ran it away twice in 15 minutes.
