Hi
I have owned this Triple lock for 10 years but I never got around to shooting it.
It is a early 44/40 serial # 3912 that has the Super King full ramp. It is not a safe Queen
and has been used. It is very accurate as you can see by the target. I did not want to shoot
factory ammo in this old Girl. So I got some 200 grain lead flat point bullets sized to .427
and some new 44/40 cases and set out to find a Target load. There is not much information
on these old 44/40 loads.

The load I ended up with is 8.6 grains of HS-6 which gives me 650 feet per sec.

Mike wanted to see a target shot standing well I had a better than average day shooting so here is the best 6 shot target. Shot standing one arm extended at 20 feet. I have a indoor Range so I do a lot of shooting. Makes it nice to walk out the back door and in to the building I have my range in.

A reasonably nice-looking gun. Given how heavy the gun is, it would be interesting to
see how well you can handle it without using the rest ! One handed, of course .

Regards, Mike

That is a beautiful firearm, I love the well used but equally well cared for look. I'm still kicking myself for letting go of a Colt Officer's Match with King ramp sights, I was young and dumb and bit by the .357 bug. I remember how easily that pistol could plunk 158gr. hollow based wadcutters into one ragged hole on something like 3grs of Red Dot. The muzzleloader club that I belong to just reverted to the use of one handed pistol for its competition, we had changed to a two handed hold to accomidate the older guys who have seemed to drop out of shooting and most of the younger guys wanted to go back to a more "traditional" method of shooting. It is after all referred to as a HANDgun, not a HANDSgun. I have been doing all of my current handgun shooting practice with my old 1917 one handed, its an eye opener if you have been used to shooting with two.

Really nice TL. I like guns in used but well maintained shape. I
am more of Hunter/ shooter than collector. I hate to get old
NIB guns, I just can't bring myself to shoot them. 44/40 TL
is one I've never owned.

Howdy

On the rare occasion that I load 44-40 with Smokeless my standard load is 7.5 grains of Unique under a 200 grain bullet. My old Lyman Pistol and Revolver Handbook 2nd Edition lists a minimum of 6.0 grains of Unique with a 205 grain bullet for 750 fps, and a MAX of 9.0 grains for 1095 fps out of a Colt SAA with a 7 1/2" barrel. It further states the 6.0 grain load is the most accurate.

If you go to the Alliant website they list four loads for 44-40 with a 200 grain bullet for Bullseye, Red Dot, American Select and Unique under the Cowboy Loads section. This data only lists MAX loads, it does not list starting loads.

If you go to the Hodgdon Website they list loads for 44-40 with about nine different powders.

Jim, I'll say it again. You have some really nice guns. I hope they bring you much pleasure. THANX for sharing......
