Rant: Stoplight Stopping Distance

Whenever I am behind someone who does this, I crowd him/her in my tall pickup, makes them think I'm in their back seat. They usually begin to creep forward, while watching me continuously. I move up also, until they're at a reasonable distance from the car in front of them, then I stop.
There is one old dude driving a vintage early 60's Impala that I really enjoy coming up on him. He rolls down his window and angrily waves me back, which I blissfully ignore. I usually wave at him when the light turns green, while he shakes his fist. Makes my day.

I bet you get invited to a lot of parties.....................

The OP said, "that never used to happen".

The first time I saw that was when I went from my little town in Florida to Norfolk Virginia in 1991. It seems like everyone did that. At least two or three car lengths between them and the guy in front at the red light.

And that was the reason I got when I asked around. Gave you space to get out if the guy in front of you's car died or something.

I see it here occasionally. I find it quite annoying. For the reason that the OP mentioned. I'm in the left lane, wanting to make a left turn at the light, but I can't get into the left turn lane because the three cars between me and the light are taking up 10 car lengths.

I frequently say nasty things under my breath.

I don't much worry about "carloads of thugs" at stoplights. I do P'O lotsa folks when I remove my foot from the gas half a mile before a red stoplight. All of them around here are programmed for "left turn only" arrows before regular green, some are 4 minutes. Folks angrily pass on both left and right, punch it in "protest." Yeah, I'll leave a space, they need a breeze to cool down. On the upside, they are in front of me. Joe

There are a few intersections where I stay back, the stop line is a bit too far forward. A turning truck would be very close to changing body panel contours.

One Car Length

With thousands of miles of roads there’s
no reason to stop right behind someone!
Same way with close behind and in front
of passing on the Interstate, this isn’t
Formula One Racing.

I always stop at least one car length behind.
It leaves an escape route depending on the
situation.

When winter starts here the first day of bad
road conditions we have so many accidents.
The Dodo birds have forgotten about
Winter driving.

There no rule about distance, also one should
be thinking Safety First, there’s no reason
to get close!

Gee, let's calculate the time it takes to travel those 3 extra car lengths. Say you are up to only 1 MPH by the time your car passes those 3 extra spots? That will take you less than one extra second to make up. Why don't people have a even a modicum of patience any more? This is the real rant here on this thread!!!! These same people, especially those living in Florida will be old and frail someday. Hope there is some karma down the road for them when in front of an impatient driver.

After noticing the formatting of this post, I was disappointed that it turned out not to be in iambic pentameter.

Some responses here are a good way to instigate a road rage incident.

I learned a long time ago to stop trying to figure out why people do the things they do.

Someone sitting 4 car lengths back doesn’t impact my day at all, why would I care?

This would be a good reason...

"If these people are in the left hand lane, they can end up blocking people from getting into the left hand turn lane."

If that makes your day you're kind of a jerk

I don't know if its the internet tough guys or an attempt to be funny, but trying some of that stuff in ABQ WILL get a reaction, probably one that'll have a negative outcome. I'd advise against it.

Besides that if you're in city traffic all around where are you doing to go? Bumper cars? Hop the curb? Hop the curb to the sidewalk or into oncoming traffic? Unless its a truck with clearance, good luck doing any of that in a fragile new car and getting away!

So I get in the left hand turn lane when the light changes and they drive forward? Still don’t see a reason to be a jerk.

A 9mm is still bigger than you can absorb.
This course of action may not only give the person you are crowding a perceived reason to demonstrate this. It leaves you no option but to experience the demonstration in its entirety
