Rant: Stoplight Stopping Distance

There are people on the road that react to a caution or red with the thought “oh my goodness I have to stop” then they apply the brake and when the car stops wherever it does, 4 car lengths back or something the next thought is “ok thank goodness I got stopped” then next thought is “where am I” and they may adjust or not. I see it often and that is the only thought process that can explain it.

Maybe they are afraid of being boxed in between 2 cars full of thugs. Leaving an escape space can save your butt.
I spent a number of years working in Detroit and ALWAYS left room between my truck and the vehicle in front of me for an escape route. Not so much for thugs in cars but for those on foot who would rob your and/or steal your vehicle. One of the people I worked with had it happen!

I've been driving for over 50 years, much of that time for a living. I learned, while driving a yellow taxi in NYC, that how stressed I was after 12 hours in traffic was up to me. I could be all wound up, or calm and relaxed, entirely my decision. This has made driving much more pleasurable ever since..

Having a CDL for 52 years and every endorsement available, and with 2 million miles under my belt I just knew I knew it all. Last year an 80-year-old woman who never traveled further than her closest Walmart gave me a safety tip that I am embarrassed to have not thought of myself. Her advice was, when driving at night you should never stop directly across from another driver. If you do so he is capable of "sizing you up" and seeing if you are alone and an easy mark. She said stop with the front of your car at his door handles. That way he cant look directly into your car and also your lights in his side view mirror will also help obscure his vision.

A car is a far better weapon than most firearms. A lot more force, more protection from other damage, and no ear damage from shooting inside the car. As for escape, if the situation looks serious enough, I will go someplace that otherwise makes little sense; for example, over a curb to the right.

No; there is always room for good sense, courtesy, and decency regardless of where you live. There is no room for paranoia and bullying drivers nor should there be.

A lovely ideal, but the reality in much of urban USA doesn't work that way.
