Rastoff's Challenge- Dropping the Gauntlet

Thanks guys.

Rastoff, the orange centers on my targets are decals that were advertised as 2", so my groups aren't that great. Though I'm very happy with this 1911, it will take some getting used to.

I'll try your challenge again after I get a couple hundred rounds through it. :)

ADDED:

Rastoff, I re-read your post.....I understand what you're saying now. I'll have to order some silhouette targets or make some centers that are the proper size for next time. Thank you for measuring it for me! I love this challenge and have respect for anyone who tries it and posts their pics.

Bob O, No need to order special targets. Rastoff made a target that he attached to his message on about page 2. It's similar to the one he shot in the beginning. I printed off a couple the other day to use.

It's at post #101 which is the top of page 3. However, I've made a better one.

This one is an exact duplicate of the center of the target I used. The first one I made is still acceptable as far as I'm concerned though. This one is just more accurate.

Print it at 100% and be sure to turn off scaling.

What I have been considering is putting up a 1" target, (aim small, miss small) then overlay a 2"x3" target afterwards and see how I did. Though doing it that way may not fall within the spirit of the challenge.
I certainly don't have a problem with you doing it that way. The "spirit" of this is to be honest with yourself and to use your defensive gun. The idea is to get out and shoot. See how we are with that gun. Hopefully, it will drive all of us to try harder to work on our marksmanship.

If I did the negative target, with my luck I would shoot it clean, but couldn't prove it because there would only be a 2"x 3" hole. LOL
This is all done on your honor. If you posted a picture of a negative target without any extra holes in it, and told us you shot it clean, I'll believe you. The only one you'd be lying to is yourself. How would that improve your shooting?

So, go ahead and try the negative target. It is a good way to work on your shooting. However, I do like to see targets with bullet holes in them. Call me sentimental, but those just make me smile. ;)

I recently bought a very slightly used M&P9 Compact, and yesterday I installed some APEX goodies in it (DCAEK and RAM).

I had some free time today, so I headed out to the range to try it out for the first time.

Naturally, I had to give this challenge another go.

I have to tell you, this little pistol can shoot! I was pleasantly surprised - and glad that the sights were right on the money after removing the rear to put in the APEX USB.

I was on track for a WORLD RECORD group, until the very last shot at 10 yrds  (You can probably guess which one that was).

OMG.......nooooo!!!!! Had to be the last shot too. Excellent shooting man, excellent shooting. :)

Excellent shooting jdesro1911! Definitely have to break out the computer for this one:

Even with the flier, it's still one of the best groups we've seen.

Now, just because I can, I measured the group without the flier...

This would be the best group without doubt. What's even better is that it's not just a good group, it's in the center. Even the previous best group was off center a little more than this. My group in the OP is not as well centered as this. (and I was using a gun that cost 4 or 5 times more than this  )

Brother, if I'm ever taken hostage, I want you to take the shot to take out the bad guy.

Shot the challenge twice today. #1 was cold.....#2 was after shooting 2 mags at 10 yds only, since that is the hardest part for me.

Then I shot the rest of my 100 rnds doing other drills. :)

I'll try the other challenge next month. Not sure if I'll try this one again though, we shall see. ;)

Thanks Rastoff for the target template, that's what I used today. :)

Nice shooting Bob O.

Yeah, it's time to dream up a new challenge. This one is one we should all return to now and then, but I think it's time to mix it up a little.

There are a number of different drills out there to test skills, but many involve using a timer or drawing from a holster or the like.

That's what is nice about this challenge - there is really no special equipment necessary and it can be done on almost any shooting range.

If I can step up on my soapbox here for a minute, I just want to mention something I see often in threads like this.

I've been a participant in a couple other threads like this on other forums, and for the most part they all tend to go the same way. According to the stats at the bottom of this forum, we have over 9,000 active members here, and this thread has had over 10,000 views, yet only a handful (maybe 20 different people?) actually participated in this.

And then there are the sticks-in-the-mud that come in to complain that it is not tactical or practical enough (or some such nonsense), or that it is "too easy" (yet they never post their results to show us how magnificent they are as shooters).

This had to be one of the most basic challenges that could be put out there - needing only 20 rounds of ammo and at most 5 minutes of someone's time - and yet hardly anyone participated.

It's disappointing.

Even if you are not the best shot, at least try - there is absolutely nothing to loose. No one here is going to make fun of you or say that you suck. If anything you will probably have some offer advice to possibly help you improve, and isn't that what we all want - to improve our shooting?

My goal was to get all shots in the orange. I'd be happier if the highest bullet was more in the orange than in the black, but I'm happy I nicked it. ;)

Thank you for that post. I have exactly the same feeling as you. Until you mentioned the numbers, I didn't realize how many views this has received. At the time of this post, there have been 11,496 views. That's a lot. It puts things in perspective for me.

Sir, you are a man after my own heart. You have seen into the heart of why I posted this.

I became an instructor to help people shoot better. That has been and always will be my intent behind stuff like this thread.

In an attempt to satisfy those who said this was not "challenging" enough or not representative of what defensive shooting should be, I made a second challenge. That thread has only received 1,244 views. Roughly 10% of this thread. Even less have tried that one even though it's really the easier challenge. Of course I understand that not everyone has access to a range that allows drawing from the holster. Many don't allow more than one shot per second so, the second challenge is almost impossible even if shot from the ready.

To all those that have posted pictures of your targets, you have my respect. It's not easy to post a picture that shows you didn't do as well as you thought you might. Therefore, I'm impressed by your tenacity and honesty.

Again, this is not about beating me, it's about challenging yourself to get better.

I have shot a bunch of targets that look really similar to this one. Haven't cleaned one yet.

Focus until the spot between your eyes burns, then realize how silly that feels and shoot the group clean before the anxiety has a chance to return. It helps me to believe that I can achieve the desired result.

Well got the target to day so I could shoot this thing. Pulled one shot at the 7yd line thing it was just a flyer but it was close enough for government work. I shot this with my 1911 Gold Cup NM using X-treme 200gr SWC over 6.9gr of CFE Pistol for a PF of 174. Don
