Rastoff's Challenge- Dropping the Gauntlet

Just a couple of comments.

Mr. Rastoff's exercise seems great for the purpose stated in the original post (... to see that the students can handle their guns safely and at least get their bullets to go in the general direction of the target.) It also includes enough shots to find out if the student has selected too much gun.

I'm reminded of the first article I read in which Jeff Cooper described the El Presidente drill as a quick way to find out whether a person was competent with a handgun.

Besides this, it's good for reminding those of us who've been shooting for a while but don't get to the range often that we need to remember the fundamentals.

I'm down for a while due to back surgery now, but am looking forward to shooting this again with the "official" target and some different defensive-type handguns.

Thanks to Mr. Rastoff for starting this.

When I first came across this challenge I thought for sure I would do it with my FN Five Seven. It is my main daily carry and the handgun I shoot most. I was a little surprised I first did it with my S&W 586 L Comp revolver.

I ran out the range at lunch today. Loaded up my Five Seven and shot this cold. First rounds of the day. The flier is actually two fliers. What a great group that could have been. Not too bad though.

What do I win? ;)

In all honesty the Five Seven is the most accurate production pistol I have ever fired or owned. Because of the mild recoil, follow up shots are a breeze and it does not induce recoil sensitivity. A great gun to introduce new shooters to the sport with. If you haven't shot one, I can't recommend it strongly enough. As far as being a defensive round, the 5.7 round has proven it is par with any handgun service caliber.

Harrish is the man! And some terrific shooting here.

Well, I tried again. Matter of fact, my first target every time I/we go to the range is devoted to this thread. And I haven't much to brag about.

Here's today's effort. This is my personal best, and although there are several outside the fence and many "touches", I'll post it anyhow.

finally decided to give it a try using my FS9; though i didnt have the sheet with me so ended up running some extra rounds. But heck was just doing it for fun and curiosity.
Room for improvement? Always.

But i like to tell myself that considering I've been shooting less than 3 yrs, and have to deal with my 'grandpa eyes' where the progressive lenses keep the sight clean but the target not so much; well the paper bad guy always loses at the range lol.

Actually most shots looked ok, but as normal when i get out to the 8-10 yd area and using the range targets it is tougher to see exactly where the center would be so those out in the '9' ring can happen. So i tried the same 8 + 10 yd distances using a better (for me) target and showed them for example.

At least little 'challenges' like these give me something else to shoot for, keeps practice time from getting stagnant.

My latest attempt, with the Colt Wiley Clapp, 24th try overall. The upper left shot is the first shot at 3 yards, grrrrrrr....... decided to finish anyway. The lower left is the 3rd shot at 10 yards. The lower right shot, I think, is in as you can see some orange between the hole and the black. It's close. This is my best target, so far.

Did this one a while back, reduced size target (11x18 IIRC?) all at 10 yds, indoor range with my SA 1911 that I rebuilt. 15 shots in the center, 15 shots in the head. Face was on purpose. The RO told me I had to shoot slower, so I did this target. He let me shoot faster after that :)

I gotta do some more targets with my other carry pistols and see how they do. Most of my EDC guns are DW 1911's, so it's kinda unfair :) I have hit a 12" plate at 100 yds with my DW 9mm ECO and also at 200 yds with a 5" 1911 .22lr Nelson conversion, standing 2 hand hold :)

I had witnesses each time...trying to video it for the naysayers. 100yds wasnt too bad to do once I learned where the gun was hitting to the sights. The 200yd .22lr pistol shot was a hail mary...I think I was more surprised than the witness!

Nice target and beautiful gun!

I am heading to the range this afternoon actually to try this!

Just got back from the range, and I'm mostly happy

Decided to try several of the guns I carry and/or shoot in IDPA. Started with the M&P45 with the Trijicon RMR (RM02). Figured it would be the easiest to use at the indoor range I use this time of year. The lighting was not very good at 7 yards, but OK at 3, 5 and 10. As expected, sighting was a breeze with the RMR. Ammo was my duty level reloads: Laser Cast 200 lead SWC over 4.1 grains of Vit N310. Both of the revolvers below are much more accurate than the M&P is, but the RMR sight really helped me shoot it accurately. Oh, and I was shooting both wheelguns double action.

The next gun I tried was my new 686+ using my duty level reload: 125 grain Hornady XTP over 14.0 grains of 2400, a mid-range load with a MV of about 1250.

I then tried the same gun using American Eagle 158 grain lead RN. By this time my eyes were getting a bit tired. All the flyers are my fault due to bad sight alignment.

The last gun I tried was my Model 28. This gun I used my duty ammo: Remington 125 grain Golden Saber, a mid-range load with a MV of about 1250. The two low shots were at 7 yards and a complete surprise. Someone turned on a light right behind me and the big dot on the front sight just popped into stark view. After that I adjusted my POA and every other shot was on target.

This was much more challenging than I expected.

Thanks for coming out to play with us Keith.

This is by far the most common comment from those who try. I too thought it wouldn't be that hard, but actually shooting it showed me different.

Your first group with the M&P is plenty small enough to fit in the center oval. It's just off to the left about a bullet worth.

Very good shooting with all the guns and different ammo. We all wish we were that good.

I was so impressed with the challenge that...

I've decided to up my game a bit. I'm going to make it I'm sure two handed with no time limit. I'm then going for strong hand only with no time limit and then weak hand. Been flaking off over the last few years with my weak hand but now that I'm shooting IDPA I'd better step up. Finally, if all goes as planned I'll try it with rifle at 100 and 200 yards. That'll be fun.

When you think of some sane time limits, let us all know so we can give those a try as well.

Keith
