Rastoff's Challenge III - Different Positions

Elm Fork won't allow that?

We sit a lot at the indoor range I belong to. There is a bunch of old guys that do all their shooting sitting. I shoot a lot of bench rest there and also shoot off a rest across my chrono. We shoot a indoor low light IDPA there the first Tuesday evening of every month also. Don

Very nice shooting and certainly better than mine. Yes, I expect the support hand to take a little longer.

The pic with my post in the background is a nice touch. :D

This is a common comment and very welcome. I want the challenge to be challenging, but not so much that no one will try it.

Thanks Don, I'm glad you joined us.

I think I did petty well on Challenge I but I couldn't get the cell phone app to work indoors for Challenge II need a time when no one else is shooting and that is hard to find. I will get this one worked out it is just a matter of getting the gun sighted in again. Just got to get the support hand working right. Don

Well since nobody else has played yet, I'll post another.

S&W 642.

I fully admit to needing more practice with it in general, especially left handed.

Today I shot cold with no warming up. Interestingly, my first five (from kneeling) had the best grouping, even if a bit off center.

I made a little box around one of the support hand targets to differentiate between the two since I was all over the place....

4" or so grouping weak handed ain't bad.

Probably better than most of my two handed shots at 7 yards with my 642...

I call foul! You're supposed to shoot the barricade first. ;) I'm just messin' with ya.

Don't worry, I'll bet more will try it come the weekend.

I'm planning on getting to the range tomorrow.
Looking forward to giving it a go.

Ugh, that was an eye opener. No rounds anywhere on the kneeling target (painful). One in the orange on the other three. Good practice. Shield 9

looks easy enough, will have to get together with my Dad and give it a try. I'd also like to try it from concealed draw and under time to add some stress.

No "barricades" at my indoor range. Any reason I can't just stand there and shoot it one handed? Can't really kneel either, since it will put a fixed table at my eye level. I can probably sit on a bench and shoot without touching the table.

Famous last words. ;) It does look easy, but so did the first one.

Obviously you can do it however you like. For this we just ask that you do it this way first so you're shooting cold.

Shooting these challenges cold gives us really good feedback on what we need to work on. For example, the kneeling position should have the best groups because it's supported. Alas, so far that has not been the case.

Of course you can do whatever you like, but that wouldn't fit the spirit of the challenge, would it?

Does your indoor range have lanes? If it does, a lane divider could be used as a barricade. If there are no dividers, or they won't allow it, use a simple 2x4. Just stand it up, don't allow your shooting side foot to go beyond the 2x4 and shooter around it to the right (or left for lefties).

Yes, kneeling will present some challenges. Some just can't get down to the ground or if they do they can't get back up (even with the old man recovery technique ;) ). So, yes, shooting from a chair is acceptable. Just don't use the table for support.

I wasn't allowed to stand outside the shooting lane and use the divider so I stood to the far left and leaned way out to the right and shoot it. I have shoot IDPA so I knew the position. Must have been ok as no one yelled "Cover". Don

I train using 3x5 cards as targets out to 10-15 yards. I'm ambidextrous and regularly shoot left and right handed. My carry gun is a SA XDs .45. I'll see if I can get to the range this weekend. I need to check zero on my MK III for an up coming defensive pistol match any way.

Ill be trying the challage with several guns. Open sight XD 45, open sight XDs 45, 22/45 w/ RDS, XDm 9mm w/ RDS.

Yes sir, 22/45 to be exact. Follows is my standard "Why I use a red dot" explanation. Lost the sight in my dominate (right) eye due to illness, several surgeries in both eyes, drugs and shots galore. All this just to KEEP what little sight I have left in my left eye. I still manage to shoot local defensive pistol and local outlaw 3-gun matches. Oh and I'm currently looking (pun intended) in to getting a bolt action for long range shooting. How? I don't really know. I just just do my best and work around my deficiencies.
