I did something very stupid. Very very stupid.

Was trying to fill in the engravings with some white nail polish. I've seen the videos on youtube 100 times. They use non-acetone polish remover to remove the excess. Followed the process to a tee.

Except it removed a fair bit of the black finish from my brand *******g new gun. Very visible in good lighting. A white haze.

Very upset. Every bit of it at myself.

So... forum freinds... What are my options at this point? Can i even get the black finish redone somewhere?

I have used an acetone based polish remover on my gun without hurting the finish, I think if you really check you will find that you have the "haze" from the white nail polish that didnt get removed. Use something stronger to remove it or try a MrClean Magic Erasure and buff the haze off. I used green enamel to fill in my stampings and had a green haze and the magic erasure cleaned it off and didnt hurt the finish at all.
good luck and keep us informed. You shouldnt be able to clean the finish off of your rifle. :D

If you mean bluing, you could either give it to a gunsmith to reblue the whole thing, or you could touch it up with 44/40 cold blue. It wont look as nice as a real bluing job but it can help. Just my 2c

Oil it and see what it looks like. Certain finishes like parkerizing have a white haze when all oil is removed. I suspect Melonizing may be the same. Even bluing changes color and gets lighter when all oil is removed.
