Coming up on 3 years ago, I had the retinal hemorrhage in my right eye that I've talked about before. Since then, the leaked blood has washed away and I've had cataract surgery on both eyes. As far as handgun shooting, I've been able to resume competition shooting righthanded and left-eyed.
But with long guns, I haven't fired any long guns at all since I had the hemorrhage. But one day I pulled a rifle out of the safe and looked through the peep sight and it looked like the front sight was pretty well in focus.
Today was my honorary nephew's bi-annual machine gun shoot over in Lancaster County. I've been going to it for years to see him even though I don't have any fully automatic arms. I decided I would go to see once and for all if I could shoot a long gun again, so I packed a Colt HBAR in Batmobile #1 and went to the shoot. Most of the targets were reactive targets (pumpkins and bowling pins) set up at around 25 yards. I looked through the peep sight and the front sight looked pretty clear so I commenced firing. Shooting offhand on my rickety knees I saw I was perforating pumpkins and after getting the range was able to shoot over a bowling pin. And my reaction was "Hey, I'm back."
My cowboy shooting double barrel shotgun has a nice rib down the center. It may be time to go back and try the trap range again.
