How do you tell of a set of Mother of Pearl grips are real or faux? I know they are Smith grips, but I can't determine if they are real or not. Thanks.

I can't seem to figure out how to attach pictures. Sorry.

Real MOP is heavy and cold/cool to the touch. There is usually some natural iridescence present in MOP that can't be duplicated in plastic.
MOP revolver grips tend to be uneven in thickness--the front or back edge of the grip can be noticeably thinner.

If you heat the tip of a needle then press it into the back of a grip, plastic will melt but real MOP will not.

As stated in post #2, weight is probably the best way to differentiate real pearl stocks from imitation ones. I have several sets of pearl for single action revolvers and each is quite heavy.

How do you know they're S&W grips?

If they are factory S&W grips they can only be genuine MOP.

The burn test on MOP grips will smell like getting your teeth ground at the dentist.

You can also tap and/or rub the grips lightly against your teeth but be careful, you could chip or scratch the grips or your teeth. I personally don't do this, but from what I gather real MOP would have a slightly gritty and definitely hard feel against your teeth whereas plastic feels, well, like plastic.

Iridescence, weight, natural uneven-ness and ultimately the hot needle test will tell you what you need to know.

I use Postimage for my pictures--upload images from the cell phone then click on the picture while in your "album." Hit the 3-dot triangle shaped thing at the top then click on "hotlinks for forum." Go back to your post/message and click "paste" and a url will appear in the text. When you post your reply the picture will appear "full size" so to speak.
