Real World Trauma Training

I had to keep my wife from bleeding to death last year. She had a bypass of the femoral artery. A month later the graft to the illiac artery ruptured with heavy bleeding. Since the incision was still open the blood flowed freely. I applied direct pressure and had to apply multiple layers of bandages but she still passed out from blood loss. We live out in the country and it took about 20 minutes for the ambulance to arrive. Had I not been there I would have returned home to a dead wife. I have always maintained that if you live in the country you're on your own for at least 30 minutes if you need police/fire/medical. As such I am stocked with first aid, fire extinguisers, and defensive means.

My son's trauma training involved a live pig, heavily sedated. In no particular order, it was shot, slashed, leg amputated, etc., and each student had to treat am injury. The class object was to keep the pig alive, although no pig ever survives the class. No CPR dummies were harmed during this class.

I hope they at least ate the poor thing when the class was over....
