I am done my X-mas shopping and I have been meaning to do a bit of work to an old M&P 1905 5" gun. Ser #5835** This one needed a good cleaning since I have shot countless rounds and never took it apart.
Forgive my pic quality and starting with it stripped.

I AM NOT A GUN SMITH !, Just a regular guy who is good with tools,,, Please take this for what it is,
OKAY, Starting with the frame already stripped.
281.jpg

Here are the parts from the front screw, spring and pin, Notice the direction of pin, Drop in cylinder stop, and the install spring on pin, Then insert in hole in front of trigger, and install screw.
282.jpg

283.jpg

Next is to install the cylinder release, Install against rear of gun first, Push against spring tension which is in the part, then lower the front into place and allow to slide forward, It will stay there, Now install the thumb piece and screw which is actually a bolt.
284.jpg

285.jpg

Now since I cant get a good pic of how the hand sits in the trigger, I will say, DONT REMOVE HAND if you arent prepared with other pics,
Ease hand away from blast shield and drop trigger into place and release hand, It should go forward into the cut out next to firing pin hole.
286.jpg

Now it is time to drop in Hammer, You will need to pull the trigger about 1/8th" and pull back on the cyl. release since it is sprung forward, So pull it back and drop the hammer in aligning the seer in the gap of trigger.
287.jpg

Now when I take an older gun apart, and even some newer ones, I usually take the trigger spring housing to a fine stone well oiled and spend a bit of time smoothing the flats, I go real gently and just work it till it's a bit smoother, MAny will be mirror smooth, But some may be rusty, But it seems to smooth up the trigger pull.
288.jpg

Now look to see that the pin coming out of the rear of the trigger aligns with the dimple in the housing, And the same for the nub on housing and dimple in trigger, all while keeping spring in, I use a small punch that fits in the housing and now push on the spring till you can get the spring below the top of the pin which holds it in, Now press the spring in and push the housing flat, Should go in smoothly.
289.jpg

290.jpg

Now install the main spring and tighten in the screw in grip frame till it bottoms out, Make sure the tang is firmly holding the pins on the hammer link.
291.jpg

Now the side plate on the old 5 screw guns is a bit easier to install than newer guns, So line it up with the gun, Set the very top in first, And set into place, If it doesnt go in easy, It is NOT lined up right, Just try again. Tap frame to get it to fall off, DO NOT PRY it off!
The hammer block system of this old gun does not fall out like the newer guns, So in my opinion it is easier to put the side plate on.
Now install all screws except for the one for the cylinder and crane, Turn them all a few times till lightly snug, Then go back and snug them in, Thumb and for finger on driver is tight enough, Install cylinder and crane, Install last screw and function test.
292.jpg

Now dont make fun of my 5" gun with it's grips,
A side note, All parts were cleaned of muck and gunk, It was very dirty and gritty as well. When I reinstalled the parts, I use 1 swab of oil from a Qtip on each pin, 1 swipe on each side of hammer and trigger, and the smallest amt. on the 3 sides of trigger spring housing. And I think it is too much in all, The gun will drip a bit when I shoot it.
293.jpg

I hope that this is helpful to 1 person! I know that the first time I took an old 5 screw apart I had a dickens of a time putting it back together and pics were impossible to find and I had no gunsmithing book.
Remember I am not a gunsmith, I dont recommend stripping a gun apart unless you are prepared to put into an envelope and give it to a Smith to put it back together!
And alway make sure you check for proper function when you are done and ALWAYS look for "push off" before thinking of firing it.
Enjoy your Holiday!!!!
Stay safe!
Peter.

Good job- no parts left over.

Nice tutorial.
Seems easier to me to put the hammer in first, before trigger.

Nicely done!

If you don't mind me adding, sometimes with the ammount of material on the S/A sear and back of the trigger, the hammer won't drop in like that.
Pull the trigger all the way to the rear while holding the bolt to the rear will allow plenty of clearance.

I like the punch idea for the rebound slide spring, I've slit my thumb several times before I started listening to my father and using the Brownells rebound slide installer
