After a detail strip, when installing the slide, the the firing pin release lever stops against the side of the firing pin safety button, and the slide stops there. What am I missing? Your help is appreciated.

If I understand your question right I believe all you need to do is uncock the hammer. You can't install the slide with the hammer cocked because the lever(s) can't be depressed.

.

On my 4046 and my 4516-2 I simply depress it with my finger when I get the slide up to it and it slips right on and functions perfectly after assy.

5946 assymbly problem

Thanks, yes I depress the lever, slide the slide on past where I see the end of the lever, at that point the end of the lever contacts the side of the button and stops. I have removed the firing pin safety button, and the slide goes on, also I can remove the lever with the button in place, and the slide goes on, but with the both the lever and the button in place, the slide stops when the slide is on far enough that the end of the lever contacts the raised button.
Thanks

By "raised safety button", you're talking about the steel firing pin safety plunger in the slide, under the rear sight base, right? (Just to make sure I'm reading your posts right. ;) )

So, does your 5946 have room on the right side of the hammer for 1 lever or 2? They were made both ways in the older 3rd gen DAO's, and they're reassembled a bit differently when it comes to the number of levers on the right side of the frame, as well as whether or not a small coil spring is used on the right side of the frame.

If it only has room for 1 lever in the frame on the right side of the hammer (meaning the firing pin safety lever), there ought not be a small spring under the lever. Did you put one there when reassembling the frame?

The Spring Rule for the DAO 3rd gen's:

If the frame has room for 2 levers on the right side of the frame (to right of hammer), then a firing pin safety lever and the spacer "sear release lever" are used, and a small coil spring goes under the levers on each side of the hammer.

If the frame only has room for one lever on the right side of the hammer, only 1 spring is used, and it goes under the ejector on the left side of the hammer.

If the nose of the firing pin safety lever is being forced upward and catches on the firing pin safety plunger in the slide, that may mean the drawbar is pushing forward on the bottom leg of the lever. The question is why?

Did you reassemble something in the wrong position that's causing the lever to lift?

Is the sear's tail located on the front of sear spring, as it should be? (So it doesn't catch on the bottom of the hammer and interfere with hammer positioning.)

Did you install the disconnector before the drawbar was installed and pinned in place? In the older DAO guns the disconnector must be installed before the drawbar is installed and connected/pinned to the trigger. (Reverse order compared to the TDA guns).

Dunno and can't pretend to guess without being able look at what you're seeing. Sorry.

5946 reassymbly

Thank each of you that replied , especially Fastbolt, my hat is off for you.
My other S-W autos are the DA/SA 06 models, I placed the spring under both levers. After I removed the spring on the right side, the 5946 reassembled as intended. I'm a retired 1911 and S-W revolver armorer, and stilll a dao greenhorn. Thank You again

De nada.

Don't think you've discovered something new. ;)

It's easy to confuse the difference between the older single lever (on right of hammer) DAO guns and the later revised DAO guns (which had 2 levers on the right) in that respect.

They created the Spring Rule for DAO pistol armorers for a very practical reason. ;)
