A few weeks back, took my SUV in for a Battery Check before the Bumper to Bumper expired… They did indeed replace the Battery @ N/C…They did a complete inspection and advised the Brake Fluid was in the “Yellow” range and would need to be changed…They also advised I had a nail in the LF Tire that was within an inch of the Shoulder, they could not patch.

I looked at it and it was a small finish nail about 3/4 of an inch in… The tech agreed with me it could be safely patched at a Tire store. The next day, I drove to a Tire and Battery Chain store and they patched it. While waiting inside, I saw that they offered Oil changes, Brake fluid flushes and other services on their Board….I asked if they could do the Brake fluid and they advised I needed an appointment for the next day.

Made the appointment and when they took the Car in, they put up a chain across the Bay entrance and had signs stating “Employees Only”… I went inside and about 20 minutes later was advised my Car was ready. I questioned the short time frame and was advised “ Their Mechanics are Professionals and Quick”.

Paid the $89.93 on Mastercard and left a cash tip for their” mechanic”

About a week later, received a recall notice from Acura about a software update under warranty. Called and made an appointment and the 80 mile round trip to the Dealer. They did their complete written inspection and advised Brake fluid needed replaced….The Tech opened up the Master Cyclinder and showed me the Yellow colored fluid with floating dark particles in it….

I called the Tire and Battery place and asked for the Manager and advised I was NOT happy.. He said they would be glad to do it over at no charge the next day….I did some research on Brake bleeding for my Car… The Wheel cyclinder valve screw has a maximum torque of 5 ft. Pounds… This is right at “Hand Snug”only.

When I arrived the next morning, I had decided NO and took the paperwork from the Dealer along with my receipt in….I said I want a refund…He asked if He could look at the fluid, I said sure and walked him out to the Car….Opened the Master Cyclinder and He said.” Looks OK to me”. I showed him the paperwork from the Dealer and handed him his receipt and advised I wanted a Full refund. Honda fluid is clear, NOT yellow. Went inside and received refund to my Credit Card. The store “ Manager” was silent. No apology, nothing. Apparently common practice.

Called Dealer and returned the next day to get the service done…It took 2 hours and totaled $ 134.98… normally 115.95 plus tax….The Tech advised it took 3 flushes and extra Fluid to clear it out and I thanked him and covered lunch for Him. They have huge Windows inside the waiting area and and You can see the techs working on your Vehicle inside their air conditioned Shop.

I’ve got a complete tool set, including a Silverline Mighty Vac, but with all the plates and rods in my neck, I can’t do it anymore…Moral of the story, trust, but verify….

I never knew that brake systems needed flushed & new fluid. Maybe I just never paid attention. Now I'm gonna check my owner's manual, and probably look in the reservoir. My car just passed the warranty timeline a couple months ago, but it has less than 25Gs on it.
I suppose oil is another fluid that should be changed, too? Actually, many years ago my cars leaked &/or burned oil so much I never changed it; just added another quart or 2, or 3!
Seriously, I'm glad I read this thread. Now I have to check my manual.
Thanks for the info, Mike! (Now, how to open the hood...)

Seems like they come up with another plausible sounding auto service scam every few months.

My former dealership (where I purchased 4 new vehicles over 18 years and had them serviced regularly) has become so predatory that I have moved back to reality for our needs. Their latest attempts at piracy included having a pre-printed service order ready for your signature upon check-in, apparently based upon vehicle mileage to include "service bundles" including brake fluid flush & refill, transmission fluid & filter service, cabin air filter(s), just about everything up to removing the stale air from the spare tire and replacing it with good fresh air, all conveniently packaged together for only $379. If the customer balks the service adviser and service manager go straight into a tag-team match to convince the customer of the urgent need for these services to maintain that fine automobile and keep the family safe on the highways. Final bill included labor for tire rotation, which I had not requested or authorized, service manager became visibly annoyed when confronted (all tire services are done at the Michelin dealer where I bought the tires).

Just about every service interval includes some new attempt at larceny. In the past:

-Bring in the intake air filter and cabin air filter to display how dirty they are, and if Joe Customer says OK they add overpriced filters and installation labor charges. (If you say no they have to put the old filters back in, so the installation labor is pure thievery. A filter I can purchase for $18 and install without tools in 3 or 4 minutes is not worth $70-plus installed).

-Tire rotation. When I noticed it hadn't been done the service manager and mechanic argued with me, swore the work was done, offered to re-do it, finally removed the labor from my bill. (One wheel has some noticeable deep scratches, had not been moved. All of the lug nuts were covered in road grime, had not been touched by a wrench. Only $30, but the assumption that every customer is stupid is just plain insulting.)

-Windshield wiper blades. Take them off to display how worn they are, then if Joe Customer says OK put on replacements at rack-rate pricing along with installation labor charges. (Really? $95 for windshield wiper blades, same brand I get elsewhere for $24 with free installation in about 2 minutes.)

-Their "multi-point inspection" reports front brake pads down to 2mm, rear down to 3mm, recommend complete brake job for only $360. Went straight to my usual alignment and brake shop, front pads measured 7mm, rears at 8mm, rotors in good shape, no work recommended. (Lunch for the crew, for sure!).

-Again the "multi-point inspection", this time showing front shocks leaking, recommended replacements at only $400 or so. Again to the alignment & brake shop (proven honest people for the past 40 years), shocks are fine, no signs of leakage, performing to specs.

Within an hour's drive from my home are at least 20 dealerships offering just about any type of car or truck available. My former dealership owner has been personally advised why he will never see my shadow on his lot again. The two cars, one SUV, and one truck we purchased from him amounted to about $140,000 over the years and he will now have to find new victims.

Caveat emptor.

Auto Service

I went to my local family mechanics the other day as both low beam headlights were out. I checked one headlight with a spare bulb that I keep
in the car and that didn’t work either. So I figured a big repair bill for some
electrical system malfunction. Guess what- only needed new bulbs, the spare bulb must have been broken bouncing around in the trunk. That could have been a big opportunity for a dishonest shop, so for sure that shop gets any
future business I have, Willyboy
