Recessed but not pinned

I have a 65-2, 3", round butt that according to the serial numbers (7D578xx) is, I believe, about a 1982 model. It has the recessed cylinder, but the barrel isn't pinned. I hadn't really thought about it much, but someone asked about it-since they usually go together. I am the third owner of this piece, and am sure it's never been worked on. Is it possibly some sort of transition model or something?
Any ideas?

It is a transition model, I have seen several.

I had a model 66-2 that had a counterbored cylinder, but was not pinned.It was not supposed to be either, being a -2.

I have a model 27-2 nickel 4" with ser.# N941xxx probably produced in 1982, like your gun. The cylinder is counterbored , the barrel is not pinned. These transition guns are very neat , and I would say scarce. They are not often seen ,and probably only account for a small percentage of a certain models production numbers.

Very nice 27, I watch closely for any transition gun. Here is the last one that I came across. S/N N877xxx. It is the lowest (N) S/N that I have seen that is transitional. I'm sure there is some that predates it,and would like to know how low these S/Ns are found.

I once had a 66-1 that was recessed but not pinned.

I have a 6" M629-1 (N872xxx) that is pinned but not recessed.

I have a 629 no dash 8 3/8" barrel that is pinned and not recessed as well. Were any of the 629's pinned and recessed?
