The 686 SSR is listed as having a "recessed precision crown barrel".

What the heck does this mean and does it lower or increase the velocity of rounds exiting the barrel?

Neither. Most S&Ws have properly crowned barrels, which is nice because it can affect accuracy. Often a recessed crown makes the crown less likely to be damaged, but that depends on how deeply it is recessed and how likely you were to damage it in the first place. I have a lot of guns, have for over forty years, and have never damaged the muzzle of any barrel, but maybe that's just luck.

The word "precision" in this context is either advertising BS, or implies that other S&W barrels are crap. I believe the former, but you are just as free to reach the other conclusion. Maybe a call to S&W would clarify this. [The last sentence was intended as humor - it would really only clarify what brand of BS the person on the other end of the line was excreting on that day at that time.]
