I am looking at transporting a couple of bicycles from Ontario, Canada to pretty much the Mexican border in Arizona.

Anybody have any experience with these things? The highway is a bad spot to discover you made a mistake.

It's going on a Ford Escape and it'll be pretty packed, so no room inside if there's a problem.

I bought a receiver hitch rack for my wife to transport her two bikes...on an Escape, actually!

Did a lot of hunting, and came up with one she really, really likes.

Amazon.com : Hollywood Racks HR1000 Sport Rider 2-Bike Platform Style Hitch Mount Rack (1.25 and 2-Inch Receiver) : Sports & Outdoors@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/416Jm3uDllL.@@AMEPARAM@@416Jm3uDllL

Folds up nicely when not in use, holds the bikes very securely [although, you have to expect a little "bounce" when heading down the road]. It's lockable, goes on and off easy, the tiny wife handles it by herself without a problem, and can be folded down while still installed, but not with bikes loaded, to access the rear of the Escape.

You have to prepare to be able to lock the rack to the vehicle, and the bikes to the rack! Think beginning with a locking hitch pin!

It fits both hitch receiver sizes.

Check Amazon we got our 4 bike carrier there. Cheapest we could find it with free shipping. We bought the Yakima SwingDaddy but you need a 2-Inch Receiver for it and it has a Built-in bottle opener:eek:. We bought this one because with it mounted it will swing out of the way to access the back of the vehicle. Depending of the bike you may need the TubeTop Adapter and you also might want to secure them so they don't rub against each other. Don't wait till the last minuet to get it as you may need to get other accessories for it. Also a good locking system as people like to steal them. You could also get the roof mount systems.

I have one that holds three bikes that I picked up at Academy Sports. I also have a trunk mount that holds two bikes.

The receiver mount is very convenient for getting in/out of the trunk, but the trunk mount is much more stable for the long haul.

I bought one from Cabelas a few years ago, I believe the cost was just under $200.00 USD. It works well, but after having to dodge someone else's bikes on the highway when they fell off of their receiver mounted bike rack, I now use cable zip ties to help secure the bikes to the rack.

Best of luck,

Dave

I tried the deck mounts and found none that I liked. This one Amazon.com: Thule 917XTR T2 2 Bike Platform Hitch Rack (1.25-Inch): Sports & Outdoors@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41yxIJIKtsL.@@AMEPARAM@@41yxIJIKtsL is the hot set. It is a 2 bike receiver hitch and comes with either the 1 1/4" or 2" receiver and comes with a receiver lock to keep it attached to your car. Also includes cable locks.

The great part is that a bike can be secured in about 10 seconds or can be on the ground in the same amount of time. It folds up, too. The other neat part is that the bikes are on platforms and are secured by the wheels so there is no banging and clanging like you get from the hanger types.

The 2" model has an adapter available so one could carry 4 bikes.

Down side? It's a little pricey but works great, in my opinion.

Had great luck with my Thule or however it's spelled. Sorry, I'm not Nordic enough.

I have this one but in a 3 bicycle configuration. Doesn't look like they have the 3 bike version anymore. I've had it for about 5 years, and it's transported 2 bicycles to Florida twice, and to South Carolina once. No issues. You will want one that unlatches and lowers to allow you to open the rear hatch without having to remove it from the receiver. You can also buy a locking retainer pin so it can't be stolen. I got it from the U-Haul outlet on Victoria Park Ave, s/of the 401. Make sure you wear your business suit.
