Recoil Rod Problem

My M&P 40 has (had) a plug in the end of the recoil rod, visible from the exterior just below the barrel. This popped out at the range the other day. It did not affect operation. Is this piece important? I realize that they put it there for some purpose but I can't see why.

Just after posting I called S&W - should have done that first but now I can praise a good old American company and their excellent customer service!

The rep explained that the plug is part of an assembly that includes the recoil rod and spring and should not come apart. A no-charge replacement is on the way! It's great when a manufacturer stands behind their product.
