The recoil spring on my full size m&P 9 keeps coming up out of the barrel grove and barely catches on the barrel is this normal ?

Once you put the slide on the frame, the spring can't come out of that notch. If it did, the slide would lock up tight and you'd be taking it apart with a hammer.

The spring works its way up to the top of the channel just barely catching on the top edge of the barrels spring channel.

Everytime I take it apart it is not seated all the way down in the channel but just barely catching on the edge.

The notch in the barrel is mainly for helping in assembly, once the takedown lever is in it's "operating" position, the spring is held mainly by the flat part of the lever. Look at the frame of your pistol when the slide is off and observe the internal working of the takedown lever. All of my M&P's exhibit the same amount of spring catching the barrel notch as your picture when breaking them down.
