Just purchased a Kimber Ultra CDP II 3" bbl in .40 S&W. Would appreciate any recomendations as to what might be the "best" carry round for this gun, manu., type, etc.. As I am planning on using this as my primary carry gun so am looking at most reliable while also having above average performance numbers. Your comments as always would be most appreciated.

Tnks,

I used to carry Double Tap .40s in my short-barreled gun. They advertised amazing velocities and they reliably delivered it with the ammo that I bought, but I can't tell you whether their ammo is still as good as it was back then.

Remington 165 gr. and Speer 155 & 165 gr. loads have good reputation. I think these are primary police carry loads in .40 S&W but there may be others too.

Federal HydraShok in .40 S&W caliber using the 180 grain loading is what rides in both of my Glock 27s. It works and works well.

What works reliably in someone else's gun might or might not work in another gun. Settle on a bullet weight that you want to use (heavy and slower or lighter and faster) and buy a couple boxes of a quality offering in that weight to test. If you find one that works well in your particular gun, you probably have your answer.

I like the 135 gr. Cor Bons, but in reality all the ammo listed here will work just fine, along with many other brands. Try some and you'll soon have your favorite too.

There are so many options out there, it's nice to have a good place to start testing. Having 5 or 6 recommended desireable choices to begin with, is a great help. Thanks for your comments, guys.

I have settled on the Federal 180 HST's. Great penetration and expand better than anything I have ever seen. The come out just like it shows on the box.
