Hey guys, new to the forum. I've really enjoyed reading the forum thus far.

Just acquired a new 686+ 5"bbl Talo. Can I get some recommendations on scopes for shooting 25-100yds. Mostly for range shooting only.

Willing to spend up to about 300 or so. Thanks!

I'm not sure $300 is going to get you the shock resistance and desired windage and elevation stability particular if your shooting hotter loads.

I would think at 25-100 yards the best option is a Leupold 2X20 pistol scope. It has done great with .44 Magnum hot loads.

I'm not sure that a red dot would be the ticket for 100 yard shooting but I've installed an Allchin mount and Burris Fastfire lll on four of my guns now and really love them.

I have found that if you're budget restricted shopping on the net can often give you great satisfaction at a greatly reduced price. This Model 28 is sporting a nice 2 3/4 power Burris scope and a new in the box base and ring set that cost less than $150 total.

Leupold FX II.
Had them put a target elevation turret on it for easy range changes in silhouette matches 25-100 yards.

I've never found a 2x I've liked all that well, a Weaver variable perhaps

I agree there are some great variables out there, but since the OP is talking only out to 100 yard, a variable solution is arguably equipment that significantly exceeds the application. i.e. overkill.

I've narrowed it down to Burris or Leupold, but leaning Leupold.

Should I go with the Leupold 2x20mm or 4x28mm?

the 2x20mm has 21ft/100yds FOV and the 4x28 is 9ft/100yds

Target acquisition isn't a big concern for my use. This will be mostly 25yd indoor range and an occasional outdoor 100yd range. Maybe a future hog hunt.

Both are around 8-8.5" and 6-7oz.

I have very little experience with scopes. I appreciate all the advice.

I find a 2X pretty easy to hold steady. Obviously a 4X is twice a tough to get a steady hold with. If you're shooting off a rest at 100yds then it's probably a moot point.

My choice would be (and is) the Bushnell Trophy 2-6x32 variable. It has super long eye relief (good enough for creedmore position shooting), good clear optics and excellent repeat ability. I use them for rimfire silhouette shooting where precision at 100 yds is required.

FWIW, Personally, Ive found 2x scopes of limited use for range work as I struggle to see a 2 or 3" target dot with one (even with fine crosshairs.) IMHO, 3x would be minimum for 50 yd target shooting and 4or 5x for 100 yds.

Agree he doesn't need a lot of magnification; but the 2X's I've shot have appeared to have no magnification at all. 4X potentially could be a bit much but a 2-6x or 2-7x could be tweaked to the desired amount.

Well, this is a little late but I suggest a Burris 3-12x handgun scope. I have one with an adjustable objective lens on my Remington XP-100R and it offers plenty of longer-range target acquisition while being controllable at lower power settings. Of course, that is a gun you aren't going to shoot offhand.

I have Leupold 4x handgun scopes on two of my T/C Contender barrels and would never buy a fixed-power handgun scope of that magnification again as I can only shoot them if the gun is rested on something - I just can't hold them steadily enough otherwise. I am a huge Leupold fan and that Burris mentioned above is my only non-Leupold scope because Leupold didn't offer a handgun scope like that, so I'm not knocking the brand.

I'm a little late too , but I'd like to throw Nikon in as a good scope as well. I've got a 2X EER pistol scope on my 629 , and have had no issues with it. Very clear and at a price that would fit the budget described.
