Recommendation for color case hardening

I have a S&W hammer and trigger that a previous owner polished and blued. I would like to have the CCH restored to the original finish. If you know someone doing quality work, I would appreciate your input.

I have used Fords for refinishing in the past. However, they do not do the CCH themselves but rather send it out. I have been told that they may be attempting it on sight now. Not to sure that I would let them do it without seeing work that they are doing. Thanks for the reply

Might want to look at Turnbull Restorations in NY. He is known for his case color work, and used to do the frame coloring for USFA revolvers, including one I own, which is very well done.

Second for Turnbull -- outstanding colors.

Saw a couple Ruger No 1s being shot at my club the other day, fella had the receivers and scope rings done by a shop in Cody, Wyoming, called Wyoming Armory. Very nice work.

RGS Restorations / Ron's Gun Shop does case color hardening both bone/charcoal and cyanide. The latter not correct for the S&W parts but it's good to have a source for that service when doing restorations.

Email with price requests on small parts like hammer & trigger. Prep charges may be incured no matter who you send them to as a quick buffing wheel job from a hot bluing can leave them less than sharp cornered. It would be a waste of time and money to CCH anything not polished up correctly.

Turnbull doesn't quote any prices anymore,,you have to call or email first then send the gun or parts for 'inspection. They have a minimum charge IIRC.

Sometimes on a common S&W model, it's plain easier and cheaper to buy a used but new/near new condition trigger and/or hammer with excellent case color on them and simply swap them out.

Just some thoughts.

Depending on the price of CCH and shipping, it might actually be less expensive just to purchase a NOS Hammer & Trigger - while they are getting harder to find in new condition now days, they are still available on ebay, G-broker, gun shows, parts guys, etc.

If yours was polished and blued that means the original spec's have been slightly altered as well. I know it's picky, but polishing does remove metal and so there's another good reason for NOS replacements.

Thanks for the great responses. I have thought about simply replacing the hammer and trigger but, they aren't "drop-in parts and likely would require fitting. I will look into that option further.

Like others...I would suggest Turnbull. Does beautiful work.

Do your parts need to be rehardened or just have the case colors redone - there is a difference.........

I sent a 25-5 hammer and trigger that had been blued to turnbull last april. They did beautiful work. It eas 150$ for polishing and case coloring, about three weeks total including shipping both ways. I kept thbe hammer nose blue for a nice contrast. They will disasamble the hammer and trigger if you dont .

Another vote to replace the trigger and hammer. The DA sear and the hand are the parts that require fitting, just re-use the ones in the gun now. The replacement hammer and trigger will most likely not require any modification.
