First, let me chime in in the original posters statement concerning shotgun ballistics vs rifles and pistols.
The shotgun should perform without a problem at 100' given you find te right load and choke combo. Patterns of OO buck at that range are devastating. For proof get your hands on some footage of tem being shot into gel. Think of it this way. That AR is a .22 caliber weapon. With one pull of the trigger the shotgun is firing 8 or 9 .33 caliber projectiles.... Pretty convincing.
Slugs also are devastating terminally, however your statement about shotguns not over penetrating vs pistols/rifles is actually quite opposite unless you're talking about birdshot. Both buckshot and slugs have been shown to penetrate everything from auto glass to refrigerators. Pistols bullets do have tendencies to over penetrate as well, however for someone living in an urban setting where over penetration becomes a bug concern may consider looking at the rifle. The lighter bullet weight of .223 tends to allow the bullet to fragment on impact with harder building materials.. This is even more true of the new ammunition being produced for specifically for these settings with soft tips..
I just attended a conference in August where Hornady demoed their newest TAP rounds. Amount them was there 55grn non-bonded round that has shown just a few inches of penetration through Sheetrock. ( sorry don't remember exact, but it was nothing compared to standard pistol ammo)
Now, I do agree that the shotgun s often too hurriedly said to be THE home defense weapon, if no thought is given to the setting if the home, or the person that is employing the gun..
Sounds to me like your doing your homework and figuring out what works for you... Let your mission drive your decisions..... Stay safe
