Red dot milling a 5906 - Anyone found a good gunsmith for it?

Guzzi takes better pics than me....

:)

Here's a couple quick phone pics of the slide profiled above now mounted on my M3954 frame....

I'm very happy with the results, the red dot will be dialed in tomorrow when my local indoor range is open. Looking forward to sorting out it's preferred ammo and this will be in my carry rotation going forward.... :D

Happy New Year to all.... :)

Impact Machine finished my slide and sent me these pics. Looks good and low to me. He even added a Glock rear sight so I could have BUIS. I'll probably have to get a taller Dawson front sight, since the rear looks higher than the Novaks, but that's fine. I'll bust out the calipers when I receive it back. I'm excited for now though…

Wow, all of these optic installs look really great, but I have a question for the group. Does anyone make an optic adapter plate for 3rd Gen Smith and Wesson semi-autos that have the large adjustable sight on them? Most of what I think I am seeing are adaptions of pistols using the smaller drift adjustable sights only. Thanks for any help on this.

Contact Galloway Precision. They are going to do a Sig P226, and they do many others. Their website says $165

Do the EGW Novak mounts work with the typical 3rd Gen slide?

Okay, I'll answer my own question. I contacted EGW and what they said is that the S&W "Novak" sights were licensed but not exactly Novaks, so the answer is "no". But their mounts that say "S&W 1911 Fixed" should also work with 59XX, etc. as the 1911s use the same not quite Novak cut as the 3rd gens did. For example #49530 for the RMR, etc.

I just ordered this EGW mount, and it's supposed to be here today. It's going on a 5906.....I hope. I'll let you know.

Red Dot Sight Mount for Smith and Wesson (S&W) 1911 with Fixed Rear Sights (fits DeltaPoint Pro, Shield, RMS/RMSc/SMS, JPoint, Redfield Accelerator, and Optima)

Update:

The mount arrived. It appears that only minor modification of the dovetail on the mount will be required. No "co-witness".
The profile on the EGW base fits my Crimson Trace C-RAD Micro I bought for the Shield Plus. (Delta Point/JPoint)

Digging this thread back out because I finally had the work done, so I wanted to report back to those who contributed to helping me.

My local guy did the work for me. After a lot of interaction with guzzitaco, I called EGW. After that conversation, they recommended getting the blank mount because the gun is early pre-Novak sight, so the dovetail doesn't work for some of their other mounts. My local guy was able to machine the mount to match the rear sight dovetail and it worked out great.

Here are the photos. The red dot is somewhat high for the level of the bore, so I suspect I'll have some difficulty in sighting the gun in when I do so (hopefully soon). I think it'll be ok because this is a purely a home self-defense gun, so if it's sighted in at 10 yards, that's all I'll need.

I'm up in the air trying to decide if I should have my 6906 slide milled or use a mounting plate. Looks like many of you have good results with dovetail mounts. C jpg of my old duty weapon... suggestions. What Holosun is best suited for the slide? 507K or 507C

The dovetail is a different angle. All I have to say about that is &*^%$*(. Makes it a real pain if you want to fit other sights and the proper dovetail cutter isn't available at the usual gunsmith parts stores.

I'm in a similar situation. I'm ready to try a reflex/red dot sight with some encouragement from a trusted source.

I have a non-TSW 5906 with adjustable sights that would be my preferred candidate. Short of buying a spare Novak-style slide, what are my options?

Read through this thread and check with EGW. I believe the cut for the adjustable sight gives you some options.

I had a 659 slide milled for Dawson/Staccato DPO plates by Dual Hammer. They did an excellent job, the plates incorporate an excellent Dawson rear sight and they have a plate for most optics. Its more complicated than a direct mount cut but it works best for my project gun

The front sight is being milled down and replaced with a Staccato front sight to match

I wish I saw this post 2 months ago....couldn't find any mount for my 439 soooo I rube goldberged a piece of bar stock into a dovetail and matched it with a B1 1911 plate....still have to try it out and see if it shoots well. by the way, is there a way to shorten the trigger pull as it goes all the way back to the trigger guard before it releases.

Here was my solution.

I have an Adjustable 5906, so I made an aluminum adapter plate from hard 7075 AL. After some primitive machining, and tedious filing/fitting to get the aluminum plate to press fit perfectly into the dovetail, it gave me a clean flat platform to then mount a slightly modified EGW adapter plate. It has run great for years.

That looks like the cleanest solution I have seen so far, and doesn't alter the base slide.

Any of our resident gunsmiths like to replicate this?
