Red dot on a revolver

Trijicon makes a nice mount for the RMR footprint.

As noted, there are a couple good mounts for optics. I've been using Holosuns lately and happy w/ their product.

I like the Raptor mounts because they were the thinnest mounts available. But did have to buy Allchin mounts. They're ok. But are thicker than the Raptor mounts. And rely on those plastic pegs to center(?) the optics to the mount. I've had some loosen on me and send my zero sideways. Not good! I've also shot several of my revolvers with taller mounts, like the weigatinny mini(?), with a heavy optic. sometimes strapping a heavy optic helps with the recoil some. Or so i noticed. (hopefully pic. below, my 627 with a Raptor mount.)

I also like the Raptor mount the best, too bad they're out of business.

The feature I really liked on the Raptor was the locator pegs were integral with the mount. I too ended up with an Allchin later when the Raptor was no longer available. The little plastic pegs were a sloppy fit , thought they would at least been a snug fit. I was going to put the mount on a 586 357 Mag but ended up using it on a 617 22lr where it worked fine. Strange too that on the Allchin packaging they misspelled Leupold and even Burris.

Just this last week I put a reddot on my 629-4 5" using the Weigatinny base. Haven't shot it yet but seems to be a very solid mounting option.

With the nice weather we had I got a chance to get out and zero my 629. Sighted in nicely no surprises. Was shooting point of aim within 12 shots, shooting 2.5" groups at 25 yards. But beware getting used to a red dot on a pistol will take practice. Acquiring the red dot is totally different than lining up iron sights. I saw a couple of references to the height of the different mounts, I don't see that as a issue. Its more to do with adjusting your grip angle so when you bring the gun up the red dot is there and you're not searching for it. Practice practice practice.

Just some humor for you forum members.

I tried a Bushnell TRS red dot on one of my 500 Mags. Bushnell said it can handle 12ga 3" Magnums.

I shot 4 medium heavy rounds and totally destroyed the scope. Objective lens was 45 degrees from normal, like a bloated fish. Don

I've read that the 3.5" 460/500s destroy just about all optics.
I recently called Trijicon and Leupold and was advised that the RMR and DPP would be covered under warranty if the recoil damaged them on any gun.
They said to try them on my short barreled 458WinMag as well.

I milled a temporary mount from aluminum before that,
and before buying parallels, and both were okay with
medium stout loads.
I still have 16 of the 200gr FTX Hornadys left.
The first two broke the 3.5"s trigger and cylinder stop,
some years ago. Smith got it back to us right quick.
I pulled two to compare the powder to H110
But for the real blasters, I'll try the old Leupold DPP first.
I trust Leupold's warranty. :D

The mount in pic will be replaced by a slightly longer
three screw mount.
Just for some range fun on the 3.5" as it's carried with irons.
Will most often have the red dots on the 8"+ 460 so normal
people can try the gun/stocks.
The 2.5-8x32mm scope for those experienced shooters
with eye care insurance. :D
Keep 50-100 TrailBoss loads on hand in the range bag.

I know it's not a red dot but this is the only revolver that I have that has an optic on it. Weigatinny makes great mounts. This one has never budged or loosened and I don't even want to think about the recoil forces that it's been subjected to.
