I have a M4 style red dot scope that I got from Primary Arms. Great sight, great value. I was just wondering, what are the advantages of a red dot scope over a holographic sight such as and Eotech or vice versa?

I need an education.

I bought an Eotech over an Aimpoint only because I like the fine 1 MOA dot more than the 2 or 4 MOA that the Aimpoint gives. And the Army buys Aimpoints because they are built like tanks. That doesn’t make them “better”, they will just be replacing them less often. Logistics speaking that makes them “better” but for fine long range accuracy I (IMHO) say the Eotech beats the pants off any other red dot of any style. Add a magnifier and you will really make some precise shots at longer range. I keep thinking of buying a quick detachable mount and magnifier just for giggles. Or you can copy the Marines and just go big money and buy Trijicon and call it a day. If you bought an Aimpoint copy then it has either a 4 MOA or 2 MOA dot. Given the option I prefer the 2 MOA since it will cover less of the target. But then other guys swear you just cover the target with a red dot and pull the trigger and you are done. I prefer the option of getting them all as close to the X as I can since I’m not trying to act like and arm chair mall ninja. I use it for fun, not for a job.

The only difference is aimpoints can be submerged and are truly water proof. Eotechs can be dropped in water or be out in the rain and they'll hold up just fine, just can't submerge them for extended periods. Operators still tend to lean to eotechs because of the hud feature rather than looking through a tube like an aimpoint. But it's operator preference and both are top notch quality. FYI, when they've got 'em in stock this is the cheapest place around (that I've found) Valhalla Tactical Supply . I got this one EOTECH XPS2-0 SHORTEST LIGHTEST HOLOSIGHT AVAILABLE XPS for $418 shipped. On eotechs, when you add to your cart it shows the additional discount. Usually it's close to another $100 off listing. It's like $60 or so cheaper than Otics Planet, rrages and Primary Arms, but you do get a clone magnifier from pa. Handling is a little slow, took about two weeks to recieve, but was told my pmags I ordered with it were out of stock. Price was well worth the wait though. Oh, and no matter how much you order it's $8 flat shipping.

I have heard from numerous shooter that EOtech can get glitchy issues with the battery terminals where recoil can cause them to have bad contact with the battery ends causing the holographic circle/dot to jump and fade in and out like it is shorting--no personal experience because I only own Aimpoints and a Vortex Sparc.

EOTech has a less than stellar reputation with the guys at the range. Corrosion issues, heat issues, battery movement and loss of internal contacts. Next door neighbor is a LEO and his EOTech failed. Aimpoint is top shelf.
