Red dot or scope?

Why not do both.

get multiple optics--I have irons a red dot a 4x16 for long range and a night vision 3x scope-----guess I should seek counceling lol

The Bugbuster is a nice compact 3x9 scope with a luminated reticule. The optics are fairly good between powers and the mildot style crosshairs light up nicely (red or green) if you want. On an AR with the pyramid front sight I had to add 1/2" riser blocks to co-witness with the sights. One important thing, the Bug Buster will add a pound of weight to your rifle. On another AR I used a $40. Bsa Deerhunter 2.5 x scope in a cantilever mount $19, it is clear, long eye relief, wide field of view and has held up quite well....light weight also.

My AR has an Eotech with 3x flip up magnifier. That is the best of both worlds, unless you expect to become a sniper. I have super quick acquisition up close and if I shoot further out, I just flip up the magnifier. For this old man, I can hold nice tight groups out to around 100 yards. A younger employee of mine holds tighter groups at over 200 yards with this setup.

I agree completely with Rook82. The 15-22 is just not very accurate. It is a 3 MOA gun which means even as close as 25 yards, it will only shoot 3/4" groups. As you get out further, say 100 yards, you are talking 3" groups. Why put magnification on such a gun? I run the TRS-25 red dot on my 15-22 and it does all I could ever want or need as I never shoot that gun over 50 yards... normally 25 -30 yards.

Again, as Rook82 says, if you want accuracy and want to shoot further out, get a more accurate gun. I went with a CZ 455 Varmint, which is a tack driver & very much so a sub MOA gun. That gun has the accuracy to warrant magnification & longer range shooting, so I use my Leuopold Mark IV 4.5-14 scope on it. I would not buy such a scope today, especially for a .22 but it is one I already had for my AR.

I run Aimpoint optics but if you don't want to break the bank look into Primary Arms...

here is my HD setup on my Colt... Aimpoint Comp M4s & Aimpoint 3X Magnifier in LaRue Tactical mounts

here is the Primary Arms version

PA red dot
PA magnifier

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I was looking at the red magnifiers but they're a bit pricey. I think I'm gonna just get a red dot and a BugBuster and play around with them. Probably gonna look for a larger cal. rifle used at my LGS for the outdoor range as well. Thanks again for all the great responses.

UTG (Leapers) seems to be an excellent company as far as warranty repairs go.

If you get a 'Bug-Buster' are you gonna get the wheel, too??

I just recently sent a scope back for warranty work and got an e-mail yesterday saying they were replacing the whole unit for me.
Only problem is that scope is OOS right now, so I rit them back saying I'd gladly pay the difference if any, for a 'Bug-Buster' w/wheel.

That was Friday so I haven't heard back yet. Turn around time has been 2 weeks so far.

I want the kids to be prepared for the inevitable Zombie Outbreak.

My strategy for the 'Zombie Outbreak':

I gots MJ's "Thriller" on my playlist so when they attack, I play that really loud. They start bustin moves and I moonwalk outta there!!

It's either that or learn how to run!! (Cuz on "The Walking Dead" they all act like their on xanex or valium) and Zombies don't seem able to move fast!

having (2) .22's is having best of both worlds.

having (1) .22 with a red dot AND magnifer is better then all the worlds combined!

if i had to choose between these two setups, i'd choose red dot/magnifer.

red dot magnifer combo

top is m&p 15-22

I have both and like the availability of color electronic choices depending on lighting, color of the background, time of year and game/target presentation. Realizing changing the X factor may change the aim point at yardage. If U zero in a 4x on 100 yards U understand going to 9 or 12 power at 200 yards.

Generally speaking.... 1-4x or 2-7x scope will cover all the bases for typical range shooting from a supported position or offhand out to 100yds and beyond.

A lot of folks buy 1x red dots because they think they are cool, talk about fast target acquisition, unlimited eye relief and field of view... then you'll see them shooting paper from a bipod with one eye closed.

If you've got good eyes, iron sights work well and there's many different front sight posts to choose from. I used iron sights until I got close to 40 years old. When my eyes didn't focus well enough to enjoy recreational shooting, I began using 1x red dot. The 1x red dot is a life saver for aging eyes because all I have to do is keep focused down range.

For me, the 15-22 is a light weight rifle that is perfect for shooting offhand at soda cans and other debris. I kept with the light weight theme and got a PA MicroDot. I also removed the factory sights which could be used as boat anchors and replaced them with light weight MBUS which I really never use.

+1 on the Primary Arms micro dot, I did exact same thing as Chattanoogaphil. Magpul BUS and the small, lightweight red dot make for an incredibly fun and easy to shoot rifle.

Add my vote for red dot and a magnifier option. Last week, my son was plinking clay trap targets all day long with Aimpoint/Eotech and 3x magnifier on AR15-22. At 50 yard, he was almost dead on, one shot-one kill. At 100 yard, we were pressing his luck and the scope to hit at 100% accuracy. You can still hit targets at 100 yard with 3X optics, but it is much harder to do with 22 LR. A fixed 4X red dot optic should work fine too. It just depends on what you want to do, but a red dot is a lot more fun up to 50 yard for quick aquisition than a high power scope. Adding magnifier makes it even more flexible.

I don't consider the Bugbuster a particularly good scope for a .22 AR. This particular scope is a much better compromise.

Amazon.com: SNIPER SCOPE 1-4X28 Compact 5" Eye relief QTA W/E side RGB ILL Etched Horseshoe Glass Reticle with Ring: Sports & Outdoors@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31L1yeSXaVL.@@AMEPARAM@@31L1yeSXaVL

For one thing at 1x if you get the horseshoe BDC reticle it makes it shoot like a red dot, while at 4x the BDC ladder works well. I use one of these on one of my 15-22s when doing 3-gun practice. Not in the same performance or price range as the Burris 1-4x24 MTAC ($399) I use on my 3-gun AR but it works well enough for practice. I got one for $140 including a cantilever dual ring mount.

i have the OPMOD EOtech EXPS-0 w/3x magnifier on one 15-22 and a Weaver Super Slam 1-6x24 w/red dot on another. I also have this Weaver on my secondary predator rifle, primary pred has a S&B PMIII but i don't think you want to spend that much!
the EO is going to set you back, i just happened to have the set up laying around and it works perfect for 100 yard jack rabbits with a can. the Weaver is a great budget FFP that at 1x equals a normal red dot scope, but you can dial it up to 6 to get anything within 200, maybe more depending on skill level and rifle you put it on. it works well with the 15-22 at 100 since you can see better.

optics planet has them on sale every now and again. I think i got mine in their clearance section for around $200 something, but remember, you can switch it out to a heavy caliber in an instant. one set back is it is heavy, not so much on the .22 but on a Spike Middy it adds noticeable packing weight, but is a tack driving FFP scope, cheapest/best for the money IMO.

S&B will set you back $3000 w/LaRue mounts......not for 15-22 but for a bushmaster predator, it's 1x4, red dot, will take CQB and ranges out to 200 easy!

really depends on what you want to spend as there is such a variety out there, but i would not get carried away with the .22 and i would have gone with PA if i had not had the expensive optics just laying around.

I have a reddot on my 15-22 now, but, a couple weeks ago my buddies and I were shooting out 75 yrds. I did very well with my reddot and both friends gave me props. But I wanted to reach out a little further, so I bought this today.

Does anyone have this or did have? I know you get what you pay for, but it has great reviews.

That's what I put on my 9-year old grandson's 15-22. For his shooting it works just fine.
