Red dot or scope?

I have the bug buster and struggle to see my shots at 50 yards at about 7x. But I think my eyes are getting pretty piss poor from staring at computer screens reading forums.

I have no problem seeing holes at 50 yards with the power at 4. :)

Unless I am shooting at targets over 50 yards, I leave mine set at 3.

Hope my scope arrives tomorrow, if it does, I'll mount it and sight it in and report back to y'all in a few days.

Barka red dot

I got my wife a Barska red dot and she was able to hit an 8" & 4" gong at 100 yards.

For the bug buster, how tall is your riser? I'm thinking about one of those and removing my rear sight until I find a deal on a buis. My eyesight isn't that good, so I'm thinking a scope is a better option at 50-100 yards then a red dot.

+1 on the Primary Arms 30mm Red Dot; use with a 1/2 inch riser and co-witness with MBUS on MOE M&P 15-22 is perfect < 50yrds. Nikon 3X9X40 BDC on ol' Marlin 80 bolt=action to reach out and touch @ 100yds+. Heaven also includes Henry lever action like he said...

It's basically about personal preference and what you need in a scope or a red dot sight. Before I bought my Aimpoint Comp M4 2Moa red dot sight I tried both scope and red dot sight and decided the red dot sight is best for me.

I set my 22 moe up exactly the same as my 15 moe.i run a Bushnell trs-25 w/riser co-witnessed with my mbus sights.i use the red dots out to 50-75yds then its irons from there.congratulations on you new rifle.

UTG (Leapers) seems to be an excellent company as far as warranty repairs go.

If you get a 'Bug-Buster' are you gonna get the wheel, too??

I just recently sent a scope back for warranty work and got an e-mail yesterday saying they were replacing the whole unit for me.
Only problem is that scope is OOS right now, so I rit them back saying I'd gladly pay the difference if any, for a 'Bug-Buster' w/wheel.

That was Friday so I haven't heard back yet. Turn around time has been 2 weeks so far.
UTG replaced my faulty scope, no questions asked. 3 years old.

Turn around time was 3 weeks.

Now I think I'm gonna get a Bug-Buster w/ wheel for my 15/22!

I finally had a chance to pick up my 15-22 yesterday. I went with the 3-9x BugBuster for now since I scored a good deal on EBay. I'll likely order a red dot after shooting it a little and see which I like best. Here's how she sits right now:

Something to consider with Red Dots if you have Astigmatism, as I do.

I don't see one dot. I see two. Sometimes one big fuzzy oblong one. It's a real pain in the arse :)

Once again we all have gone off on a tangent. If the originator of the thread asked which is best for paper punching with a 15-22 I must say you cannot just shoot paper with a 15-22, you must include rocks and cans and jugs of water, etc. This rifle is too much fun to be limited to paper, buy a low power compact scope find a place to shoot and enjoy!

Here's mine with the Bug Buster and a micro red dot on a 45 degree mount.15-22.jpg

get the right scope

If you decide on a scope, be sure it has an adjustable objective. Most AO scopes will adjust for parallax from 15 yards out to infinity. A typical centerfire scope is usually set by the factory to be parallax free at 100 yards. A typical rimfire scope without AO is usually set at 50 yards, so if you want to be able to shoot accurately at all ranges look for a scope with AO. Some of them are very reasonably priced. JMHO

I've tried scopes, red dots, green dots, magnifiers on both of the latter, and honestly prefer just a plain green dot sight.

Good for quick target acquisition, works in all light levels and with a black background (I have trouble with red dots on a black background), and green means GO. LOL I've tried a magnifier but honestly the added weight and bulk wasn't worth it, nor was the sight picture really that much better. I'd like to see someone with a nice setup in person with a magnifier and see if it works for me, perhaps it was just my setup.

As for range, I see a lot of folks are saying to use a red dot for 25 to 100 yards, but I disagree. I'm regularly pounding our gong at the gun range, at 200 yards, with my green dot and iron (mbus) sights. I have the exact same sight on my M4 and do the same damage.

Hell, honestly, master your iron sights first, then move to a budget green or red dot and see if you like it. If you do, master that sucker and pick up a budget scope. If you don't like the scope or feel it is "cheating", then go back to your dot or upgrade your dot.

I've been REALLY happy with the Sightmark line. Not super cheap junk, and not super expensive either. I have 2 of these, and am going to try one out on my 870 to try some slug sniping.

BTW, that one has 4 different reticles on there you can pick from, and 5 brightness settings. I got it for the green dot, I could care less about the Zombie marking stuff and would prefer to take it off (need to figure out how to get the shield off to paint over it). Not sure why they thought it was a good idea to put a rail on it either, perhaps to mount another sight? Bayonette? Angled Fore grip? OH! You could side mount a low profile scope! Or a micro red dot!

I kid, I kid...

Sportsmans Guide regularly has it for under $100.

Well, here's what I have right now. I went with the 3-9x Bugbuster cause I scored one cheap. I had to mount it on a riser but, I have a set of see through scope mounts on the way. I also ordered a set of 45 degree offset BUIS. I'm going to the range with it on Sun with it, will report back after.

The Bushnell TRS-25 Red Dot is on sale right now for $79.99 on Amazon. I just bought it elsewhere for 100.00 bucks...after 2-3 weeks of waiting for a sale to come along.
