I stumbled upon a 3" 586-4 at the gunshow this weekend. It has been carried and holstered, about 80% is how I would rate it. Would sending it back to S&W be the best place to have it refinished?

That's a fairly scarce gun. I would think it would retain more value to leave it as is rather than re-finish it. It's your gun though,so your call. Smith would do a good job for you if you decide to go that route.

I could live with the condition that it is in, but the hogue grips have left the side plate worn under the grips and I would like to change the grips to wood. The worn spot would show with wood grips on the gun.

Don't refinish it. Look: Unless a gun is new, unfired, in box, with papers........SHOOT IT!!!! and please don't refinish it. It will kill any value it has, and will in the end be worth much less than you paid.

I don't believe I have ever seen a 3 inch 586. Is it a round or square butt? I agree with the rest, don't refinish. Clean and shoot.
Nice find sir!

Truman, polish the worn spots with flitz metal polish lightly to smooth
them out.
Then try some good quality cold bluing solution, polishing with
0000 steel wool in between applications.

If you do not get a great result, then decide to re finish the gun
at Smith and Wesson or a shop such as Fords.

In my opinion a quality re finish on a late model gun does neither
add nor detract from the value.
But,, IT must be a top quality job, otherwise it detracts greatly
from the value.

Good luck
Allen

By the way , How much was it ?? $$ IF I may ask?

I'd have S&W refinish it. A factory re-finish shouldn't hurt the value if you even care about that. All my guns are shooters, life is too short to have safe queens.

BTW; we need a pic!

Life is too short to have ugly guns.Shape it up to suit yourself.

I agree. A factory refinish with the paperwork to back it up shouldn't hurt the value .Now a refinish by Bubba's gun shop would be a different story .
What ever you do go out and shoot and enjoy it . Yea a 3" 586 is uncommon but it's not like you have a Colt SAA with serial #1 .

I agree with FT's advice ...... it's your gun and do as you wish, but a re-blue will lower the value IMO.

Besides, a gun with good honest wear has a certain beauty and appeal to it.

If you are a collector or looking to flip that 3" 586 for a profit, I'd not refinish it.

But - if you are an accumlator/shooter like me, then I'd fix it to my satisfaction. Fords in Florida does beautiful work. Good luck! :) Regards 18DAI
