need some help . I want to refinish a set of J- frame target grips. Remove old bad finish & lightly sand scratches . Has anyone removed and reused the medallions so they don't get scuffed up when sanding ?I plan to finish with a linseed product not a varnish any suggestions ?

I refinished a set of J frame grips which -thank god I checked- had plastic medallions. I was going to soak them in acetone. I carefully drilled out the flared back side and then pushed them out with a pin punch- It was easy.
Then into a jar of acetone over night the old finish came off easy.
I applied a finish of several coats of very thin penetrol, then ren wax. Looks good I`m happy with them.

I have refinished a lot of grips or "stocks" as folks like to call them. Never removed medallions, Did not even know there were plastic ones? If they are plastic then yes, the chemical stripper will eat up plastic.
