Thinking of having my 28-2 refinished. Checked SW performance Center web site. They list several types; I'm imterested in high polish blue. Their examples only show two in the blue, both captioned "Polish Blue" but the price list shows "High Brite Polish $275.00" and"Standard polish & Blue. $220.00.". I
presume that the more expensive is a higher degree of blue & polish but nothing to see or explain on the site. Can anyone shed some light on this? going to call them tomorrow but like to have all the info I can before calling. Thanks.

The more the gun is polished & the finer the grit used, will improve the "gloss & depth" of the finished product.

The higher the polish, the deeper the blue appears. All the work of bluing is in the buffing and polishing of the metal. The chemical bluing process is comparatively nothing compared to the pre-bluing surface preparation, which can be very time consuming.

I am sending my S&W 539 to S&W for re-blueing. I talked to one of the performance center phone guys and he was evidently having a bad day as he wasn't a lot of help. But I am going to ask for the high polish finish as I want it to be shiny. He stated they won't adjust the blueing to a lighter blue as I asked for, so we shall see how it turns out.

He did say they would call me with an estimate before doing the work. They take apart the pistol and check it over and fix things if they can. I'm sure thats why the "estimate", because they probably will add in for certain parts if needed.

My 28-2 arrived st Smith yesterday. I wanted the high polish blue too but he said it's only for nickel finishes (or chrome I guess). Anyway, $220 for complete Black Pentrate finish which polishes to a good shine according to SW and $14 return shipping. Also told me probably 12 weeks. Oh well, another start of the looong wait for the big truck! :)

By the way, I have never sent anything to S&W. Exactly how is round-trip shipping handled and how much is it?

Has to go Second Day (Air?) to SW. No permit needed as it's going to the manufacturer. Call Smith & Wesson Customer Service 1-800-331-0852 and they'll tell you just what you need to do. Also they'll give you the address as you don't want to label it Smith & Wesson for obvious reasons. FedEx cost from Maine was about $23.00.
