hello, I am a long time fan of s&w 19 revolvers, I have over the years had a few that were the best shooting most accurate revolvers i have ever seen. so, I jumped at the chance to buy my latest find,- a 19-5 I saw at kiss tactical,-a small local gun shop here in maricopa az. where I was told a widow sold a group of pistols belonging to a departed husband, well,the timing was good,and lock up was tight.but it had been neglected,showing some light surface rust,mostly on the color case Harding of the hammer, & trigger. and there was a scribe marking below the ejector shroud,-mabey a police department id mark of some sort.? - shame,but a trip to the range and it shot great as expected. now I am interested in having it factory refinished. but wonder if. the scribe engraved on the ejector shroud. can be removed.any info will be greatly appreaciated. First, welcome to the forum.
As nice as the – 5 variant is they don’t have the collectors interest that the older P. & R. models have, so a good refinish should not matter to the resale value. Keep in mind that any good refinish is going to be costly and you will never recoup the cost of the revolver and the refinish if you chose to sell it. If I were making the decision I would keep the revolver as is, and put the money for a refinish aside to be used when a really nice M-19 comes up for sale. Come on everyone needs more than one M-19

yep. ya can never have too many..especialy when they shoot this great.! and at a bargin find.. the refinish would just be to preserve.& not make it look so neglected

I said this in another thread but will repeat it. Gun bluing is just not all that protective. A fully blued gun will rust just about as quickly as one with holster wear and bare metal showing. If you want to prevent further rusting just clean it thoroughly after every range trip and wipe it down occasionally with a silicon cloth. It won't get any worse than it is now and you'll save a lot of money.
