REG MAG LOWEST SN?

Several references list Hoover's RM#1 sn45768 as lowest. I have seen Sharpe's RM#2 sn45756 and RM#21 sn45767. Any others with lower SN than 45768? I know SN can vary a lot between RM#s. Just curious. Thanks.

45756 is the lowest I've recorded (RN 2). But you are right, i.e. the correlation between RN and SN is not very high. We're often told that the correlation between SN and ship date is not very high either (on any S&W) and there are plenty of examples to prove it. However, I've found that the RN on Registered Magnums correlates very well to ship date.

Kevin...the high correlation between shipping date and registration number makes sense as orders were placed into production as received and S&W assigned registration numbers in sequence.

The problem with general rules is the glaring exceptions. Early registration guns clearly didn't follow rules as most were given or presented to worthies. Then the big blip near the end when KC ordered up 250 of them.

I see no exceptions, especially glaring ones, in this case. Regular shipments seemed to start in April, 1935. The first 15 or so were given to worthies, as you put it, between April and July, 1935. The standard commercial shipments seem to track the ship dates because, as Bill points out, the RN were assigned as the orders came in. Even the KCPD numbers follow the pattern.

Other than the two mentioned in my opening post, anyone know of one with lower SN than Hoover's SN45768?

I'll throw in another comparison. Serial 46521, reg 282. 225 difference in reg number and 183 difference in serial number.
