In looking for some other parts this morning I saw a box that came to me through my uncle's "gun" related items. Its a blue cardboard box but covered with tolex or some grained vinyl with a latch. Interior is blue satin and it has the tools I assume it came with like baby screwdriver, rod and bore mop. Did I quick search of the web and cannot find anything that looks like this old box. And no the gun if he had one is gone. Most likely traded in for his 6" Python that he carried on patrol with the CHP. I try to post a picture but anyone have any ideas about this box?

Pictures please but has HeloMt said, as described, it sounds like an early 44 Magnum box. There were a couple versions of that so clear pictures of the surface material, the inside and the latch would be helpful.

If it is was blue on the outside with a pebble grain and a blue satin interior - it is probably an early 44 Magnum box as noted above... like this, except with a pebble grain texture to the contact paper (one of the very early 44 Mag boxes).

But if it is blue on the inside and "grained" like wood, then it could be an early Model 57 box. Did it look like this?

As far as I can tell, the factory only made them for a very short period of time and the handful or two that I have seen all shipped with early Model 57s.

Both of the above boxes were made for Magnums, just not the 357 Magnums (although there are a few (VERY FEW) of the blue cases known to have been made for the Combat Magnum)

All the best,

RKMesa, it looks like the first box except it has registered magnum on the lid and a darker blue satin on the interior. Since my uncle was a cop in central California I dont think they authorized the big 44. I'll try to get pics today. Thanks for the comments!

Someone should show a box for a Registered Magnum so ogso can see it. He said something about a "baby screwdriver", that could be the correct SAT (sight adjustment tool) for an early .357 Magnum. He also says his box has "registered magnum" on the lid. A picture of his box would answer a lot of questions.
I wonder if someone wrote registered magnum on a box for a 44 Magnum.

UPDATE: I need to learn how to read, Combat magnum. Sorry for any heartburn. Trying to load images to imgur and post here. Makes sense it was a (4") model 19 that he upgraded to a 6" Python. He was a Taft city cop before he was with the CHP. All the CHPies at that time wanted longer tubes and since he was single opted for a python. Pics to follow... I hope.

There are some directions on how to post pics here. They need to be in a proper format (jpeg for me) then you can go to the Go Advances button below the quick reply box, then go with Manage Attachments, then select the Choose File button, then after it's selected hit Upload. Then hit Preview Post to look at it before you hit Submit Reply.

At least that's how I do it.

ogso, good for you!
The blue presentation box for the Combat Magnum is quite rare.
Maybe only something like a dozen or so known to exist.
I would say quite valuable in any condition.
There may be a serial number in white grease pencil on the bottom of the box.

The RM box I know is cardboard---two piece---blue---a "picture box".

Are there/could there be some others for "special" guns for "special" people? Of course!

All that aside, I'm wondering just when the term "Registered Magnum" (as noted to be on the lid) came to be---and from where? My answer is I don't know, but I'm inclined to believe it's "Collector speak" which came along long after the guns did.

I'd be delighted to learn different------from a reliable source.

Ralph Tremaine

Edited to add': The good Doctor Cross (Doc 44) comes to mind as a reliable source---he who's " Been there and done that!" on the one hand, and who has pretty much instantaneous access to all sorts of often more than interesting information on the other hand.

Do the tools that are in the box look like they came from Smith or Colt? I ask since he had both. I have no need for this box is it worthwhile to to sell it to a forum member (opposed to fleabay or gunbroker)? And of course it value. Thanks everyone for the help, that's why I love this forum!

Yes, that sight adjustment tool (screwdriver) is appropriate for a gun in this time frame.
Is there a serial number written in white grease pencil on the bottom of the box? If so, what is it?
