K260175 is a .357 Combat Magnum shipped in May 1956. There is no mention of a presentation case on the invoice, but that is not unusual as I had K260190 with a presentation numbered to the revolver and also shipped in May 1956. The invoice does not show a presentation case for this Combat Magnum either. With the addition of K260175, I have eleven .357 Combat Magnums verified as being shipped with a case as their serial number is written on the bottom of the case in white grease pencil. In addition, Olympic Wholesale, Los Angeles, CA purchased five .357 Combat Magnums with a presentation case on June 21, 1956 (serial numbers unknown) and five more with a presentation case on July 26, 1956 (serial numbers K262223, K262355, K263032, K262272, and K262617). Rex Firearms, NY, NY, purchased four presentation cases at $5.00 each on July 3, 1956.
K260190 is shown in its case in the photo below. Click on the photo for a better look.
A presentation case was never cataloged as an accessory to the .357 Combat Magnum although it was listed in S&W's parts sheet issued in the fall of 1956 at a cost of $5.00 (same price as the presentation case for the 44 Magnum). I believe S&W originally was going to offer this model with a case, but when orders flooded in the company realized it was unnecessary. The few cases they had were used for a few guns and the rest sold off.
