I'm becoming interested in pre war smiths. I am in the process of buying my first. A K22 outdoorsman, shipped to my hometown pd in jan. 1935.
I was wondering what a shooter grade but perfect mechanically reg. mag. would cost to buy? Thanks, Byron

Probably $1000 to $1500, maybe $2000. The KC PD guns would make good shooters, as most have
been somewhat poorly refinished one or more times.

Typically, these guns have some modicum of collector value to someone, so, as shooters,
they are on the expensive side. If you want to something to shoot .357, I'd suggest
a more modern gun. A model 27 of most any vintage is a reasonably good shooter, and a lot
less than a late 1930's magnum.

Mike is probably right but I'd suggest that it it may be difficult to find a prewar magnum for $1000, just because of their popularity (principally caused by this forum

). I really haven't seen any, including badly refinished ones that went much less than the $1500-2000 range lately and most are quite a bit more. He is also right about the KC guns. They turn up pretty regularly and, even though a few folks look down their noses at them, many of us really appreciate the "real life" dings that they bear. They combine the "Magnum Mystique" and the LEO history...what's not to like. I promise that once you get one, handle it, and shoot it, you will have a hard time convincing yourself to get rid of it. But if you ever do, you will very likely get back more than you invested.

I paid 1400$ for a KCPD pre war magnum that had a post war rear sight and was heavily polished before average re-blue. It also was missing proper stocks. It may not be worth 1400 but I won't know until I sell it.

There are other pre war S&Ws though. Perhaps your jones could be fed with a 44 special model or an 38 Outdoorsman or Heavy Duty. There are medium frame 38s and 22s and one could get 2 or three of them for the same $ as a pre war magnum.

Or, just keep your eyes peeled and hope to get lucky. Once or twice a year we get a post from some lucky stiff who stumbles onto a reg mag, knows what it is, and the seller thinks it is a beat up old Model 27 and not worth much...

I love those posts!
