Reloading .38 S&W

Last year I reloaded .38 S&W for the victory revolver. I used a grey colored coated bullet. Cannot remember where I ordered the bullets. Who makes a coated 140-145 bullet for the .38 S&W. Any recommendations for bullets?

Been getting mine at Acme but I want to try something a bit softer for the .38 spl.

I have been using 125 LSWC bullets from Rim Rock with 2.4 grains of W231

The easiest bullet to use is a 38 cal. 148 gr. Hollow Based Wadcutter, the soft lead type with the large hollow base . Seat the bullet out to give the same powder space in the 38 S&W case asa factory bullet .
On firing the soft hollow base expands and fills the oversize bore giving very good accuracy.
Use Cast Bullet loading data for 38 S&W - 150 gr. cast bullet - Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook 4th edition - data for 7 different powders listed .

IF you want to load the .38-200 to duplicate the UK load for the Victory model, I did that with lead bullets. I got some tapered roundnose 200gr. lead bullets on Gunbroker one time that are actually a .360 dia. rifle bullet but they work well for this. The OAL is probably too long for some antique revolvers but the Victory model will accept rather long loaded carts. I also got some of the classic blunt round nose 200 or maybe 195 from Maplewood bullets. AKA super police load. I got them sized by him for both S&W and some sized for .38 spec. Maplewood Bullets | Vermont made custom cast bullets I think his 38 357 bullets drop out of the mold big enough diameter for the S & W bore before sizing. So he can make them for you and keep them .360 or so I believe. As for coated .360 bullets, that sounds like hens teeth to me. I put 2.5 gr. of Unique under the lead rifle bullets and it shoots fine out of my restored Victory model.

200 grain .358 lead bullets (as used for .38 Special) will work just fine for loading .38 S&W if you can't find any .361 bullets.

When I reloaded-many years ag0-for my Enfield No. 2 Mk 1 an HBWC over 2.7 grains of Bullseye gave excellent accuracy.

Missouri Bullet co makes some gray colored coated bullets. I load their 240SWC's in my 44 special. My favorite 38 bullets are Acme 158SWC's and their 148WC's. They're great bullets and their coating holds up extremely well.

I stumbled on another supplier that offers a softer alloy (95-5 so, 13-14BHN) for all of his pistol calibers, as per e-mail conversation.
