SAFE LOADS !!

I was doing some test loads with a snub nose S&W with Winchester 110gr SJHP's and also the Sierra 110gr JHC bullet.
I found the standard winchester 38 load and several 38 +P loads with some almost having good groups but NONE at these velositys gave a poa with my revolver except one load that duplicated the maximum Cor-Bon load.
Since the medium and high velositys were not working out, I got the bright idea to see what lower or even minimum velositys would do to get the bullet to strike at my aiming spot on the targets that were set up at around ten feet. A distance that I can hit what I am aiming at MOST of the time at my age.
I was using RedDot powder at the time and Alliants minimum of 4.8grs in my snub ran around 840fps with the ES at 63. Dropping the amounts my ES went to 47...74.....237!! Yikes !!! Velosity was 702 fps...........high of 818 and low of only 581fps. I think the copper was starting to rub the barrel at almost "NO exit" speeds.

There is a reason for this data.

The low velocity and high ES is the reason the slower loads are all for cast or swaged bullets in handguns. A jacket/core separation will ruin your day. Besides, you need a certain velocity for JHP bullets to expand and even 818fps is probably below the threshold.

I regularly shoot extremely accurate LSWC loads that chrono @732 fps.

Glad you caught the problem before it became a problem.
