Reloading for a Remington 700 ADL Bolt .223

Anybody else?
I shoot a Howa 1500 in .223 which has a 1:12 twist. I have shot 50gr, 52gr, 53gr, 55gr and 60gr bullets through it and all worked well but I like the 55gr bullets best. I find the velocity is high while the accuracy is still good which is a good combination when Varmint hunting. My favorite bullet so far is the 55gr Sierra GameKing BTHP #1390. I get sub 1/2MOA accuracy using Varget. (although I have not tried their BlitzKing or Varminter bullets)

Recipe:
FC or R-P Brass
CCI-400 Primer
26.0gr Varget
55gr Sierra GK #1390

I originally I used 25.0gr Varget but the velocity was too low so I worked up to 26.0gr and the velocity went up to a AV 2996 fps while the accuracy remained the same. When tested that load produced groups that were under 1" @200 yards across 5 groups. @100 yards the groups were under 1/2".

You'll be glad you got the remington instead of the savage.
Try 335 powder with 50 or 55 gr. Hornady V-max bullets for anything
from p-dogs to coyotes. This shot well out of my 700's out west
and i'm sure it will for you too.

;) I don't know about the Remington but I love my Savage BVSS in .223. Don

I've got a CZ-527 with a 1/12" twist, and it loves the 52-53 grain BTHP's, but likes the 55-grainers a bit less, and gets downright irritable with 60-grain bullets. I settled on 26.5/Varget with the 52-grain Sierra HPBT, and when I'm having a good day, we can stay around a half-inch at 100 yards......some days it's half that. Good triggers REALLY help.

IMR 4198 was specifically developed for the .222 cartridge family back when. The suggestion of Remington 7 1/2 (Benchrest) primers is a good one, changing primers cut my group size about 25%. If your rifle won't group good 55 grain bullets with ~21.5 gr IMR 4198, it's not likely to group anything.

Bullets between 50-55 grain should work well. A 1-12 should stabilize 60 grain bullets, but that may vary. I've found the Sierra 60 gr Varmint Master HP to be extremely accurate, but my barrel is 1-9 twist.

The one thing you don't mention is the intended use. If you're going to punch paper, the 52/53 grain target bullets are a good choice if you want extreme accuracy. The Sierra 50/55 gr Blitz bullets will work well for varmints. The Blitz design uses a thinner, more fragile jacket that will work well with the 1-12 twist.

Two loads that have worked really well for me:

52 gr Sierra match jbthp, 25.5 gr. H4895, Fed 205m primer

55 gr. Hornady V-Max, 26 gr W-748, Fed 205 primer

For years Ive used H-335,26-27gr and Rem 71/2 bench primers with 52&53 gr match HPBT and got 1/2-5/8 groups. Three years ago I tried H-Varget and its more accurate in both my 223s, also last year I tried Berger match bullets 52&55 gr. they give tighter groups ,but for varmiting not necessary. I tried Varget in my 222mag 40XB,Hart match barrel and its better than H-335.

For the record, 4198 was introduced in the mid'30s.

Good shooting.
