About a week ago, I put out a post asking people what is the best car to get if your going to be driving 40k miles in a year..I was planning in advace for a district manager position which covered around 30 stores in the MA/NH area.

Thanks for your suggestions but it looks like another deadend for me...here is the email I sent my brother earlier today.

What a day…earlier this week I had to purchase a suit, tie, shirt, shoes…for the interview cost just under $400. The meeting was to be at their location in Harwich, MA (over 120 miles away each direction from my home) with the regional vp and was confirmed the day before. I left the house and planned for the 2.5 hour drive by leaving 3 hours early for the meeting, upon arrival I was informed that the VP was not at the store! I spoke with the manager, informed them that the meeting was confirmed, he gets on the phone in the back room and comes back out telling me…"He tried to call you on your cell phone and let you know they are all set and found someone for the position" Are you kidding me!!! A confirmed meeting…I spent $400 for a suit etc and now a five hour drive roundtrip and they found someone…when??? In the window from the prior day at 4:00pm when the meeting was confirmed and yesterday ....I let the manager know my feelings also the fact that I don't even have a cell phone (btw no messages were left on my house phone and the caller id didn't register any callers all day)…all he did is shrug it off and say, "what do you want me to do, I have to do with this type of thing every day?"

In prior years I had purchased close to $5000 of merchandise from this regional company....Never again will I set foot in there stores...

I would love to speak with this VP and let him know what a piece of work he really is...My hopes are he gets fired in the near future due to his lousy values and ethics.

And to think, this is the type of person who has a career and there are others who are heads and shoulders superior in ability, ethics, execution and are unemployed...

Look and see if this jerk has a Facebook page. Request to be his "friend" using a slightly different spelling of your name, then after being confirmed, blast him. Keep it civil, but spell it out what an inconsiderate a** he is. Just a suggestion, don't get into long term trouble over this. ............ Big Cholla

Sorry to hear you got the whipping on this one but you are far from the first or the last. I still think most of them have to pass the ability to either be a complete jerk or complete moron with bonus points given to them if they are both. And then they have to tell you all about how they see the big picture at their level while you don't see where the company is heading. Why is it so hot in here and what am I doing in this basket? I worked sales in a major retailer that opened a new store. Once upon a time there was only one of them on this side of town. Then they opened another and whammo they doubled the sales and revenue. So they opened another. Whammo, more sales and revenue but not so much this time. So they opened another. Yay, still more sales and revenue, but again even less. Now there are five that I know of and they all bounce between making money and slipping from time to time. I need a college degree to figure this one out??? Really? They need another meeting to run some charts and maybe hand out some spreadsheets? Maybe set up a task force to schedule an interview with a consultant to see where they went wrong and how many lay offs they need to have since this is a recession now? So don't feel too bad, next month the position may be canceled and he may be out on the street. I'm sorry, streamlined, the position may be streamlined.
 
It may not do much good, but this is what i would do; I would send letters (certified with return receipt) to both the president of the company and the chairman of the board of directors telling them about how you were treated by this jerk. Hopefully, it might limit the jerk's future with the company.
 
Base was 75k with performance bonuses, health insurance and three weeks paid...compare this to my only income at present coming from several of my rental properties...yeah...I would have bit my tongue and jumped at the opportunity. Relative to my position at my prior company this was very much a junior position, there is no doubt in my mind that I would have exceeded expectation by a significant margin and done very well.

Your are still confused! Stop, think: If this is how a candidate is treated, how do they treat employees? You didn't miss a great opportunity, you avoided a disaster! I found out the hard way.

You now have a great wardrobe to make an incredible first impression at your next interview!
 
yeah...great...it was my first face to face interview in over a year...

Find out who this jerk answers to and send a very professional letter describing your disappointment in the integrity of their organization.

Zig Ziglar wrote many years ago "You can't do a good deal with a bad guy". This is an eternal truth. Congratulations, you found out early.

Keep looking. They didn't deserve you.
 
Yaa it sucks, but it never does any good to "burn any bridges" Sending letters, face book et etc is not gonna change a thing and can only come back to haunt you.

Your turn will come, remain confident and vigilant.

That's what I have always said. Why burn bridges, when you can blow them up?

Seriously though, my field is pretty small and people hold a grudge for a long long time. I've pissed a few people off over the years for "doing the right thing" and I'm still waiting to cash that Karma in.
 
Without a hint of malace, why dont you send a bill for mileage with the explaination that you showed up and he didnt? See what happens.

Exactly!

Send them a bill for your TIME and FUEL and MILEAGE. The suit is not gonna fly. Send it certified mail, and hold them to it in small claims if you have to. ID the person who set the meeting and then he will have to drive to meet you in court........The Judge my only pay you for your gas and mileage, but I would bet you would be awarded something.
 
Thats a great idea...on the other hand I was stewing in my juices the past few days and thought about placing a monster order, a really large one to the tune of 100K (about a months revenue for two stores ...and prior to confirming the shipping info, let them chace me around for a few days and finally call them and cancel the order. I am very familar with their return, shipping policys and would not be subject to any fees. The joy would come when someone from the corporate office calls and trys to reclose the sale...I would then drop the fact that the VP didnt show up, lied to me with regard to saying he called a cell phone that does not exist...and let them know that all future business would be done with one of their competitors.

is this wrong?? or would this right a wrong...

If so, you can always do that latter. See how nice steps fly first. They just might like your style. I got some of my best jobs years ago when I didnt give a rip if I got them or not!
 
In my opinion OCDC1 has it right, do not burn your bridges. What do you know, maybe the VP's boss told him to hire some one else?? Like the VP's boss's brother in law? Maybe they will be looking for someone else for a similar position in the next week or so, do you want to pass that up?
In any case the VP won't be hurt by whatever you say or write.

I think I wooda poked the store manager and said "show Mr X my thanks" (JK).
where i work our plant mgr is from canada and thinks he walks on water. Wed., a guy that was taken from 1 dept and put in another was told to do something he'd only "seen" done once. when he asked the boss for help the boss jumped down his throat. The guy went to the HR boss and told of the incident.
Thursday, the bosses had their monthly meeting, with the Co. owner coming down from Canada. Well, Mr. walks on da water got a Royal butt chewing!!.
I guess what goes around, comes around.

Stew on this.....my dad told me this years ago and it has served me well. Most of the bad stuff that happened to me over the years came from gut reaction stuff I did when I was really angry at someone or something. Write a scathing letter to the president. Put it in yout drawer for a few days. Re read it and then decide whether to send it.
I've got a drawer full of old unsent letters.
 
From the scant description you gave of the job, you aren't missing much. Your having to provide over $20,000 of transportation out of your pocket unreimbursed, is a huge negative unless you are a large percentage owner of the operation.

It sounds like a small nitch market. The best thing for you to do is contact that company's competition and sell yourself to them. Make sure they understand your ability to beat the original company on any head to head deals due to your knowledge of the industry and superior "people skills".

Don't bother chasing a couple hundred bucks from the other company, you won't get it, and you will burn bridges big time. The guy that did you wrong just might have a heart attack next week, and there will be openings there again (or in a branch closer to you).

While surfing the TV this morning I heard someone say something very appropriate to this situation.
Being very angry at someone is like drinking poison and thinking that they will die.
 
The manager likely never talked directly with the vp. The secretary had a prepared list of generic excuses for any occasion, while the he/she vp was out on the GC.
