Remember the Socialist that I took shooting?

I too will say I had my socialist leanings... until I got a real job out of college. When I saw that instead of going to help me pay rent, 33% was going, in any way, to help those unwilling to work, I saw that I had been duped. It all sounds nice in theory, but the practice of it simply takes advantage of hard working, honest people.

Gael, some of my happiest moments as a taxpayer came when I had two kids in college and also knew that I was paying for programs for "the disavantaged" and "the under-represented" at a state college that my kids could never, ever qualify for.

My kids were too white (self-evident, I guess) and too "rich" -- they had middle-class parents who actually worked for a living, held jobs or ran businesses, made mortgage payments and all the rest.

Yup, I was pleased to be a taxpayer...

I do this every chance I get. I take them through the safety talk and manual of arms, then have them load the gun and square off on the target. Just before they fire their first shot, I say, "You have a loaded gun in your hand. It won't do anything you don't make it do."

That realization rocks their worlds.

I have heard them on at least two occasions express the fear that having a gun might MAKE them want to shoot people. I have asked if they ever have the urge to murder their family when they are chopping carrots in their kitchen.
