I read about a bear attack that supposedly happened last summer some time.

A Czechoslovakian exchange student & is girlfriend were hiking & camping in Denali Park.

On the third night in the twilight, a couple of brown bears attacked them when they were in their tent. They were unarmed as one would expect in a Natl. park.

The bears mauled the guy, but his girlfriend was able to get away relatively unhurt with only minor scratches & bruising.

She ran for help & when they returned with park rangers & troopers, they found the bears had eaten most of the guy.

When interviewed, the girl stated that she thought it was the female bear that was the aggressor. The troopers then tracked down the mated pair of bears & destroyed the female.

Upon extensive post-mortum testing, I was discovered the female bear was not the attacker, but was actually the male bear's fault.

The troopers then arrested the girl for killing a bear out of season, wanton waste of game, & destroying an animal within the park.

She should have known better, after all everyone knows "the Czechs in the male" :)

I expect you've all seen the Alaskan Fish & Wildlife advisory a few years ago about hiking in bear country. It said that black bears are much less likely to charge, but the brownies can be terribly aggressive. Recommended that in brown bear country hikers attach small bells to their clothing and carry high-strength pepper spray.

It went on to tell how to identify which bears were in the area by their droppings. Black bear scat, it said, would normally contain undigested nuts and seeds, sometimes tough grass stems. Brown bear droppings would contain little bells and smell of pepper spray.

I think already posted here but it reminds me of the woman who was countering the belief that small calibers are no good for personal defense.

She was able to save herself from a bear attack using a compact 380. She went on to explain how a single well placed shot to her boyfriend's kneecap was all it took for her to simply walk out of the woods to safety.
