I seldom shoot any factory ammo and am not familiar with most of what is available (or what used to be available). I was given just under two boxes of Remington 130 grain FMJ ammo. Box says muzzle velocity of 1050 fps but no +P designation. Anyone familiar with this ammo? Is it considered standard pressure?

Yes, meets SAAMI standard. OK for plinking, not the most accurate ammo I've shot.

Yep, standard pressure. Feels like a powder puff from a 6" 686 so it's ideal to get new shooters started.

A listing for the similar Winchester product shows 800 fps, which I think is more likely than the stated velocity for the Remington.

+1;
as well as the 135 JFN plated brand of bullets,
at least in my pistols.

Those sure look like 9mm to me, Ed...?

Cheers!

P.S. Thanks for the hint vis-a-vis the CFE-Pistol: for some reason it is about the ONLY powder Hodgdons doesn't list for a 130gr in 9mm? Bought a bunch of 130gr Rainier RN way back when: found out they worked just fine for both 9mm & 38 Special in target loads.

Geeeze;
I guess I had better put my glasses on.

Just a wee bit off...... but close.

but you know that I did shoot a 130gr 38 special a little bit ago, right ??

Getting old, sucks, some times.

Were they not JHPs (WC) with that TOTALLY DIFFERENT profile...?

Imagine trying to load one of THOSE in some 9mm brass!

Cheers!

Yep. I've got a bunch of it. Midway had a pretty good price on it in bulk a couple of years ago, and I stocked up.

Good practice/range ammo.

I didn't chronograph, it but my wife shot some of it recently at fifteen yards. Definitely not target ammo, but if you get it free or at a good price, it's worth shooting.

Yes. Std pressure. It's my favorite ammo for my 642 (except for my amazing wadcutter handloads). It makes the 642 fun to shoot.

Sounds pretty hot for standard velocity target ammo. I'm thinking it's a mistake. Most stuff in that configuration is around 800 fps.

Yes. I didn't chronograph the ammo, but I'm pretty sure the 1050 fps on the box end label is way more than the real velocity.

In my M49 snub nose , I loaded the Speer 135 Gold Dot when it first came out.
My lowest fps test load came with SR4756 at 568-587fps and a full load of
IMR4227 did 673-724fps.
W231, Red Dot and Unique all got 800fps or more.

The newer 130 HST was a very interresting test, with no data listed.
My slowest 2" load came with 2400 at an average of 573 fps.
My fastest "safe pressure load" came with Blue Dot at 940 fps.
Red & Green Dot as well as w231, BE-86 and Unique all worked with this bullet
you just needed to find the accuracy and POA that made you happy, with
a load from 798 to 839 fps for a factory Dup. load.

I have lots of lead 125gr bullets for my light target work that are cheap to load and very light in recoil with the little J frame.
My loads go from 531 up to 745 with CFE-p but my most accurate load
in my revolver is 3.3 gr of Trail Boss at 600 fps.

Don't knock a 130 +/- weight bullet in the 38 special........
they can give you some great fun and accuracy with the right load.

Have shot a bunch, 130 Grain was the AF standard 38 Special round.
As posted It's usually pretty soft ammo and it's what I mostly use for casual J Frame shooting.
Recently bought some PMC , I think its 135 Grain.
Here's some 130s posing on these loaders.
