I remember being a young shooter, going out to the old rock quarry with my BL-22 and my 686, spending all day going through a 500 round box of 22's and a couple hundred or more of 357's. I knew both of those guns like the back of my hand. Today I own a lot more guns then I care to mention and even through I shoot each of them as often as I can, not one of them do I know like the first ones got...I always think of that old saying "beware of the man with only one gun" O'well back to reality...

As a little kid, my Mom would drive me to my grandfathers place and I'd roam his woods with a single shot, .22 Remington rifle, stalking crows, squirrels and rabbits.

Not long after that, I begged my Mom for a shotgun (Dad had passed at this point) and I finally got a 20 ga., single shot, shot gun and decided I'd become an expert at duck and goose hunting. That didn't come true at all but I gave both of these guns to my son who inturn got his boys started shooting with both!

Good times!

If my poor memory is right today, I think my first firearm was a 20 gauge single shot that was loose as a goose. It's a miracle that it didn't unlock when I fired it. If I still remember this tomorrow it's probably true. :-)

Have a blessed day,

Leon

First time I shot a real firearm was at Boy Scout Camp, Summer of 1963.

I remember as a kid a neighboring family's single shot shotgun that when fired would break open and eject the empty shell. In reality this was very dangerous, but the family thought that this condition was "Special".

My favorite was an Ithaca 12 gauge double w/outside hammers my dad got from his sister in the 50's. The firing pins would get stuck if you (???) dryfired it and forgot them, then when you loaded it and slammed the barrels closed, both rounds would go off. I was 14 when this happened to me, fortunately(!!!) only happened once (lesson learned) and no harm done. This falls into the category of what could have been REALLY bad!

Going out to the street with bottle caps full of wax to shoot .... Skully.

Wow Memories. Stickball, box ball, stoop ball, hand ball...we were never inside the house. Spauldings were the expensive balls if I remember right, usually we got pensy pinkies. Box ball, was great for the street I lived on. The apartments across the street lined up perfectly, 2nd floor was a double, 3rd floor was a triple, on the roof was a HR. Thanks for the memories. :D

My first shooting was with my dad's single shot .22 rifle. This would have been roughly 60 years ago. We'd drive out to the town dump stopping on the way at a gas station to pick up a box or two of .22lr shells.

We'd spend our time at the dump shooting rats. They were everywhere crawling around the garbage.

I recall one time my dad's brother came with us and he had a .22 rifle with the tubular magazine under the barrel. I thought that was the pinnacle of high tech. As he was loading up my dad said "look at Manny, the thinks he's going to war".

One thing that stuck with me was my dad taught me to clean the rifle and he said that after each use it was to be cleaned before it was put away. I may not do it immediately after I get home but I still clean my guns every time I shoot them even if I only shot a mag or two. If I didn't shoot much it's a minimal cleaning but still it gets done. They were both combat vets, my dad in Korea and Manny in WWII, so they knew the importance of keeping a weapon in good working order.
