i just had my son return my chief that was given to me by my wife in 1963 for graduation from PD academy.I have been using my model 10 for home protection. The chief needs some TLC and change out the springs how do I remove the spring on the chief. The rest seems just like Model 10 will post pictures when finished.

Pull the grips, start to cock the gun until the hole in the hammer strut shows up, and put a straightened paper clip through it. You can even do this without removing the side plate, although there is usually no reason to do so.

Just for the record this revolver has 6 springs, which "the spring" are you asking about?

I assume you mean the main or hammer spring? First, there is really no reason to replace this spring just because of the age of the revolver unless, maybe, it has been cut to lighten the trigger pull.

If you do replace it use a S&W factory spring. There are after-market springs available but there is no reason to use them, they are NOT better than factory springs.

Now, first remove the sideplate. To remove the hammer spring cock the gun and you will see a small hole in the hammer strut. Place a piece of wire in the hole, hold the hammer and pull the trigger. Let the hammer down until the load on the spring seat is on the wire, then push the hammer forward. The strut and now captive spring can simply be lifted out.

Once out of the gun you have to disassemble the strut. Using a vise preferably set the jaws just far enough apart to let the strut pass between them freely. Push straight down on the strut to compress the spring enough to take the pressure off the wire and remove it. Release the spring carefully. From here it is the customary "Re-install in reverse order."

Sorry I should have indicated hammer spring.i changed out my springs in my model 10 a few years ago and did some trigger work.Just did not ever try to remove the spring for 50 years no need.I am 74 and just had carpel tunnel surgery so I am putting in lighter springs. Thanks

I have replaced the rebound slide springs in all my Chiefs with 13# springs from Wolf, but left the stock main springs in place. I did try a Wolf 18-pounder on one, but didn't notice much difference (only supposed to be a half-pound lighter) so figured I might as well stick the stockers. In between that & polishing the rebound slide & adjacent surfaces, my Chiefs all have pretty nice DA trigger ulls.

I just replaced the hammer spring in my Model36 a few days ago.
Piece of cake to do it, and the lighter spring makes a difference to me. The DA trigger pull on it was ridiculously stiff, probably over 12 lbs.

I fired 200 rounds (4 types of ammo) through it with the new spring and every one fired perfectly. I have replaced the hammer springs in 3 S&W's and 2 Rugers and never had any issues with a round not firing.

As mentioned above; remove stocks, cock hammer, put an "unbent" paperclip in the hole, uncock hammer, remove spring. Wear eye protection, when you put the new one on if you slip it takes off like a rocket.
