Have my grandmother's Model 10 .38 recovered from her house fire. Had it cleaned up and inspected, but still has the fire smell on it. Any hints/suggestions to help remove that smell?

Thanks,

Murphy's oil soap does great on wood(furniture,etc._) that has smoke damage and light burn marks, but I have no idea what the effects would be on steel. Good question.

Put it in a gallon Zip-Lock baggie full of coffee grounds (fresh) seal up and leave it for a week.
This tip worked for me in de-stinking Marlboro Man's holster!

First, remove the grips. Then, did the entire revolver in acetone. Let it evaporate. Then oil it properly and put on new grips. For the wood grips, give them a good scrubbing with turpentine. That will get rid of a lot of the odor. You may end up having to just replace the grips, which is not so big a deal. Pachmayr's would work very well for this particular revolver.
