Anyone have any experience removing the "gold" that some folks fill the lettering with on their guns? To each his own and all, but I have one I would like to "clean up" and clean out the lettering on barrel and sideplate.

Acetone with a old tooth brush or nail polish remover as stated above.
Most of that "gold" is powdered bronze. Here's a kit to do "gold" filling. Acetone and a toothbrush will do the job to remove it. However, the instructions in this kit say that it should not be used in "an area that has cast engraving. It cannot be removed once it is applied."

Just be aware that most all common toothbrushes will start to disolve/melt when acetone contacts them.
Get as much of the 'gold' out of the markings by wiping it out then go at it with the toothbrush and minimum acetone. Lacquer thinner will do the same to most toothbrushes and soften and melt them.
If you're not carefull you can have an awfull mess on your hands and gun with disolved plastic as well as the gold.
If you happen to have on of the M16 cleaning brushes (toothbrush type) handy those work the same and I haven't found any solvent yet that attacks the plastic handle or bristles of them.
Keep any solvent, especially acetone or lacquer thinner away from wood grips as it will remove any finish on them.
Pachmyers too. Scrubbing away at the markings can splatter the stuff around pretty well. Any splatters landing on the rubber grips and then quickly drying, will leave the gold inlay matr'l they may carry behind on the grips. Just extra clean-up.

If you haven't tried it already you might try some plain old Hoppes #9. It wasn't all that uncommon for people to use Testors gold paint to fill in lettering and engraving.

or you could just go into any store with a sign that says "we buy gold of any kind" hanging in the window...though their responce might be a bit different then what your seeking....lol
