Part of the laser etching is worn off. How can I remove the remainder without affecting the finish of the slide?

I very much doubt that you can eliminate the etching without the need to refinish the slide. I once erased a "Lady Smith" etching from a bead blasted stainless revolver , wound up with a very glossy area and went ahead and polished the entire revolver.
If I were in your shoes I would get the slide refinished - an individual slide doesn't cost much , and there are lots of finish options. You'll wind up with a custom pistol.
That would be a case of making lemonade when stuck with a bunch of lemons.
